The National Football League pre-season is here and that means four weeks of winning in a major profit center ignored by most because they can’t quite seem to get in step with what it’s all about. I do understand what it’s all about—that it is football played under a different set of rules and dynamics—and relish the opportunity get it one.

I will be kicking off the pre-season Sunday night, August 8, with a 10-unit play on the Hall of Fame Game between the Cincinnati Bengals and the Dallas Cowboys. This one, always played in Canton, OH, site of the NFL Hall of Fame, begins at 8:00 P.M. Eastern Time and will be televised nationally on NBC.

Just in case you think I’m not ready, circle Thursday, August 18, on your calendar, because I will be releasing my first 25-unit game pre-season game on that night and I am looking for a blowout winner.

The colleges are already in camp, with the first NCAA games scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 2. There are seven games on the schedule that night and six of them are on national television. The TV schedule that night is:

Southern Mississippi at South Carolina (ESPN)

Marshall at Ohio State (Big Ten Network)

Northern Illinois at Iowa State (Fox Sports Network)

Pittsburgh at Utah (Versus)

USC at Hawaii (ESPN)

Minnesota at Middle Tennessee (ESPNU)

The only game that will not be televised that night is the Florida Atlantic at UAB contest.

As I said, the season is here and it is time to get on board and start winning.

I am again offering the bargain of the season with my Early Bird Football Program, which gives you more than $800 in value for just $199. Here is the entire Early Bird package.

Handicapping Hits For Pre-Season

1.       The NFL pre-season and the NFL regular season are both football but they are games played under dramatically different rules and dynamics. Do not forget this and most of all do not think a team that has a great pre-season is going to have a great regular season. The Detroit Lions went 7-1 in their last two pre-seasons and recorded a 2-30 record in their past two regular seasons.

2.       One can get a leg up on what to expect from each team in a pre-season game by starting with the coaches’ pre-season won-lost record. Some coaches like to win these games while others simply don’t care about the outcome. For instance Arizona Cardinal coach Ken Whisenhunt is 2-10 in the pre-season while Miami Dolphin coach Tony Sparano is 7-1 in two pre-seasons.

3.       Many teams scrimmage against one another for a day or two before they meet in the regular pre-season game and that means they are by no means strangers to one another.

4.       Each coach wants to accomplish something special in each game and will meet with the opposing coach and they will decide on the best way for both teams to get done what needs to be done. That focus is usually on offense and that means the defense has a big edge in these games. Defenses know in advance what the offense is trying to do. There is a reason most betting lines are in the -1 to -3 range and that totals are very low.

5.       It is extremely important to (1) know the quarterback rotation of each team and (2) how long each coach intends to play his first units on both offense and defense.

I will expand on these things during the week, but this is enough to get one thinking about what rules the pre-season.
