The Cougars are currently one of two Mountain West Conference programs among the Top-25, with Utah looming close behind at No. 15 this week. BYU earned its lofty position in the polls by posting its second straight shutout in the most recent outing, a 44-0 defeat of Wyoming in Provo back on September 20th. The Cougars dominated every facet of the game as they have posted back-to-back shutouts for the first time since the 1985 season. Having outscored opponents by a combined 172-44 so far this season, it is easy to see how BYU has put together the nation's longest winning streak at 14 games. Even with a bye week it seems that the rest of the nation has recognized the strength of the Cougars by moving them up several spots in the national rankings, although head coach Bronco Mendenhall may not see it that way. "I'm not so sure it says a lot about our program, I think it says a lot about the system. It is interesting to me that we can move up without playing a game. I think somewhere fundamentally that's not right."
As for the Aggies, who were also off last week, they are at the opposite end of the scoring spectrum here in the early going. The team dropped three in a row to begin 2008, falling to Oregon and Utah by a combined 124-34 in back-to- back games. However, on September 20th the squad not only picked up its first win of the season, it also opened its Western Athletic Conference slate with a reassuring 42-17 decision against Idaho at home.
Utah State trails in the all-time series by a count of 41-33-3, but still holds a narrow 18-14-2 advantage against the Cougars in games played in Logan. Two years ago, BYU dominated the Aggies in a 38-0 shutout. USU has fallen in 11 straight games that it has played on days other than Saturday, with seven of the last 13 such contests being Friday night affairs versus BYU.
The Cougars have been a quick-strike team this season, putting up 35 points in the first quarter and another 75 combined points in the second, which generally means the outcome has been decided by halftime. Quarterback Max Hall, who divorced himself from football last weekend as a promise to his wife, has been nothing less than spectacular with his 74.3 percent completion rating. But more than just hitting the right people all the time, Hall has managed to get his squad into the end zone with incredible regularity. Almost one out of every seven of his completions has ended up as a touchdown, the junior having thrown for 321 ypg and 15 TDs already. In the beginning his favorite target was Dennis Pitta (29 receptions, 432 yards, three TDs) but now the attention seems to have been turned over to Austin Collie who has a team- best 30 catches for 386 yards and five scores.
But before the Aggies consider focusing their energies on either Collie or Pitta, they have to be sure to keep an eye on running back Harvey Unga who has four TD catches himself and is by far the top running threat for the squad with his 366 yards and three touchdowns on 77 carries.
Generally, by the time BYU and its opponents have reached the locker room at halftime, those other teams understand that playing a conservative game is no longer an option. In all honesty, the run defense for the Cougars has yet to be challenged, allowing just 107.8 ypg to rank fourth in the Mountain West and 33rd in the nation. With teams having to conserve time and move the ball quickly, they tend to be more inclined to opt for a passing attack against BYU, which doesn't seem to work in their favor either. While the pass defense for the Cougars has permitted almost 200 yards a game to rank 49th in the country, it is important to note that in terms of pass efficiency defense, the Cougars are first in the conference and 27th in the nation with a rating of 104.87, which means very few drives are ending with points on the scoreboard.
David Nixon, who has already been named the MWC Defensive Player of the Week, is not only first on the squad with his 4.5 tackles for loss, he's also tops with two forced fumbles, has one interception and a fumble recovery to his credit as well. Ian Dulan and Jan Jorgensen both have a pair of sacks after four games to account for half of the team's total.
While the BYU offense has come storming out of the gate early in games, the Aggies have found their offense stumbling along. Utah State has tallied just a single touchdown in the first quarter thus far, which often means the squad is already staring at a deficit on the scoreboard. Quarterbacks Diondre Borel and Sean Setzer have tried to put together a cohesive passing attack but it just hasn't come together as of yet. Borel has completed 54.7 percent of his pass attempts for 122.5 ypg and five touchdowns, against two picks, while Setzer has a better completion rate (.590), but has thrown for less than half the yardage. What makes Borel the better option under center more often than not is his ability to tuck the ball under and make something out of nothing. The signal-caller leads the team with his 217 yards rushing on 49 attempts and has been credited with one TD.
Were it not for the 42-point outburst against Idaho a couple of Saturdays ago, the Aggies would be struggling to post even the 23.3 ppg they are at the moment, which has them ranked fourth in the conference and 82nd in the nation.
Against Idaho the Aggies limited their conference foe to a mere 84 yards rushing, but by no means is the team as well adjusted to the run as that one stat might indicate. In fact, Utah State was completely dominated by Oregon on the ground in the second game of the season, allowing the Ducks to post 408 yards on 53 attempts. Utah also used that mode of offense to keep the USU defense back on its heels, coming up with 248 yards in the middle of September. Between the Ducks and the Utes, they came up with a combined 11 rushing touchdowns, so it is easy to see why the Aggies are ranked eighth in the conference and 113th in the nation this week against the run, permitting an unsightly 218 ypg. With a pass defense that is permitting another 225.3 ypg, it is easy to see how opponents have victimized USU for almost 450 ypg in total offense.
Of the top four tacklers on Utah State heading into action this week, not one of them has managed a sack, with Darby Golden the top man in that category with his two sacks and three TFLs to go along with the only two forced fumbles on the unit.
