No. 4 Missouri opens Big 12 play at Nebraska

Lincoln, NE (Sports Network) - Following a bye week, the fourth-ranked Missouri Tigers finally kick off their Big 12 schedule, as they travel to Lincoln for a showdown with the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

Gary Pinkel's Tigers continue their ascent up the rankings and have certainly looked the part of not only a conference contender, but a national title contender as well, with four lopsided victories to start the year, including a 42-21 pasting of Buffalo last time out.

This is homecoming week for Bo Pelini's Cornhuskers, who are coming off their first loss of a season, a 35-30 setback to nationally-ranked Virginia Tech last weekend. Following this game, Nebraska will take to the road for two straight league games, at Texas Tech and at Iowa State.

Nebraska maintains a sizeable lead in the all-time series with Missouri (63-35-3), but Missouri has won three of the last five matchups, albeit all coming in Columbia. The Tigers will be seeking their first win in Lincoln since 1978.

The Tigers boast one of the most potent offenses in college football, coming into this game ranked second in the nation in scoring (53.75 ppg), passing (404.3 ypg) and total offense (595.5 ypg). The team has also been able to move the football on the ground (191.25 ypg).

It certainly doesn't hurt to have the front-runner for the Heisman Trophy running the show in senior QB Chase Daniel. The veteran gunslinger ranks fourth nationally in passing efficiency (193.4), completing 75.9 percent of his passes, for 1,412 yards and 12 TDs. The main recipients of Daniels's accuracy have been tight end Chase Coffman (28 receptions, 379 yards, three TDs) and wideouts Jeremy Maclin (26 receptions, for 391 yards, four TDs) and Tommy Saunders (19 receptions, 308 yards, two TDs). Just a sophomore, Maclin is an All-American with the ability to take over a game, as evidenced by a career-high 172 yards and three TDs in the win over Nevada.

Sophomore tailback Derrick Washington provides this offense with balance. The 5-11, 225-pounder leads the Big 12 in scoring, with two scores in each of the four games this year. Washington has carried the ball just 53 times this year, but has made the most of his opportunities, averaging nearly seven yards per carry (6.8).

The Tigers have not had to rely on their defense thus far, thanks to the prolific offense. Missouri is allowing 20.8 ppg, but getting out to big leads has forced opponents to pass the ball often, leading to some misleading numbers. While the team is yielding just 99.0 ypg on the ground, the Tigers are giving up 279.5 yards passing.

The big playmaker on this side of the football is junior linebacker Sean Weatherspoon, who has done a little bit of everything, leading the team in tackles (48), TFLs (8.0), interceptions (3) and adding 2.5 sacks. Senior rush end Stryker Sulak has been successful getting upfield and disrupting things as well. Of his 16 total tackles, 5.5 have come behind the line of scrimmage, with three sacks.

Despite an impressive comeback bid, Nebraska was unable to get the win over Virginia Tech last weekend. Coach Pelini believes his team can move on and turn its attention to the Tigers.

"Hopefully it will make us better. I think it will make us better. You can go a lot of different ways. With this game, you have to let it go. It will help us if we learn from our mistakes and we can get it fixed and if it doesn't then we'll be standing here in a similar situation in the future. Our kids' attitude is good, the effort is good, if we keep that going we're going to keep progressing as a football team. Thats what we need to do."

With a balanced offensive attack that is netting just over 420 yards per game, there won't be a lot of sustained losing streaks for the Cornhuskers. The team has the ability to move the chains via the run (155.5 ypg) or the pass (265.5 ypg).

Quarterback Joe Ganz has played well under center this year, completing 64.4 percent of his tosses, for 997 yards, with seven TDs. Nate Swift (15 catches, for 259 yards, two TDs) and Todd Peterson (15 catches, for 187 yards, one TD) have had the most success in the vertical game.

Tailback Marlon Lucky is instrumental to this offense as well, but has just 42 carries in the first four games, averaging 4.4 yards per carry. Lucky has scored half of the team's eight rushing TDs, but could probably be used a bit more, especially this week in trying to keep the high-octane Tiger offense off the field.

The 2008 Cornhusker defense has been vulnerable at times, including allowing Virginia Tech to rumble for 206 yards on the ground last week. The numbers on the year aren't bad, but not quite what is expected of a stop unit in Lincoln, with Nebraska giving up 19.5 ppg, on 354.8 yards of total offense per outing.

Senior LB Cody Glenn currently leads the team in tackles with 35 stops, including four TFLs. The pass rush has come from varied sources, culminating in 11 sacks on the year, with three players tied for the team-lead with two sacks apiece. In all, the Cornhuskers have forced six takeaways in the first four games, including five interceptions, coming from five different players. Senior end Zach Porter has been effective in several areas, leading the team in TFLs (five), with two sacks, one INT and a blocked kick.

The Tigers are playing in their first real hostile environment of the season, but Coach Pinkel isn't real worried about that.

"Hopefully we can handle it. We prepare for it, like any other time. We embrace it. I think we like to play in it...It's a great stadium, with a great tradition. We'll prepare to deal with the noise, just like with every road game."
