Texas Tech owns its highest national ranking since 1976 and appears poised to challenge the perennial powerhouses in the Big 12, such as Oklahoma and Texas, for supremacy. The Red Raiders are 4-0, their best start since opening the 2005 campaign with six consecutive victories. They have been idle for two weeks, as their most recent outing resulted in a 56-14 triumph over UMass. Doubters argue that Tech has yet to play a quality opponent, and that is absolutely true. But the likes of Kansas, Texas and Oklahoma await, so the Red Raiders will have to prove themselves eventually.
Kansas State improved to 3-1 last weekend with a closer-than-expected 45-37 victory over UL-Lafayette. Considering that the Wildcats' other two wins came over North Texas and Montana State, the club has plenty to prove heading into this league opener as well.
Texas Tech owns a 6-3 series lead over Kansas State, including three straight wins over the Wildcats.
Texas Tech has been unstoppable offensively, as the team is racking up 45.8 ppg and 572.8 total ypg. The Red Raiders are averaging nearly six yards per rushing attempt and over 13 yards per pass completion. A staggering total of 24 offensive touchdowns have been scored in four outings, split evenly between the run and the pass. Quarterback Graham Harrell has great numbers, as he has thrown for 1,573 yards and 12 touchdowns against three interceptions. Of course, it helps to have arguably the nation's best receiver in Michael Crabtree. With 29 catches for 457 yards and six touchdowns, Crabtree has consistently beaten double teams and found the end zone. Shannon Woods has rushed for 276 yards and seven scores while averaging well over six yards per carry.
Against UMass last time out, the Red Raiders posted 538 yards of total offense. Harrell connected on 27-of-34 passes for 322 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions. Crabtree scored as usual, and Woods rushed for 108 yards and three scores on only 10 carries.
Opponents are scoring just 16.0 ppg against Texas Tech, which is yielding 346.0 total ypg. The Red Raiders have been tough against the run, surrendering 100.0 ypg on 3.2 ypc. Sure, foes have been able to pass for 246.0 ypg, but it is important to remember that Tech has been comfortably ahead in its four games, and opponents have been forced to abandon the run and throw on almost every down. Still, the Red Raiders have intercepted 10 passes while allowing just three passing scores. Opponents have only made good on 22 percent of their third down conversion attempts, a stat that Tech can be proud of.
The Red Raiders held UMass to 258 total yards last time out, including 92 on the ground. Still, it is hard to get too excited about the fact that Tech shut down an FCS opponent. If the club can put forth a similar effort against K-State, fans and analysts will undoubtedly be impressed.
It is difficult to find any player nationally with more impressive numbers than Kansas State quarterback Josh Freeman, a top-notch NFL prospect. Freeman has completed 67 percent of his passes for 1,105 yards with 11 touchdowns and two interceptions. As a runner, Freeman has racked up 113 yards and six scores. His versatility, athleticism, size and arm strength make him a can't miss star at the next level in the eyes of some scouts, but he needs to prove his worth against Big 12 competition this year. Brandon Banks leads the club with 22 catches for 463 yards and six touchdowns. The Wildcats are scoring 47.0 ppg while gaining 441.2 total ypg, impressive to say the least.
In the shootout win over UL-Lafayette, Freeman connected on 21-of-28 passes for 272 yards and three touchdowns with zero picks. He also ran for two scores in what was a brilliant overall performance.
Kansas State is allowing 22.8 ppg and 370.5 total ypg this season, so it is fair to say that the defense has been average at best. It is clearly concerning that the club is yielding 206.5 rushing ypg and nearly five yards per carry. While Texas Tech is a pass-oriented team, many of the squads that K-State will face in the Big 12 rely heavily on the run. Brandon Harold is a playmaker for the defense who has already posted 8.5 TFLs, including three sacks.
Kansas State yielded 335 rushing yards to UL-Lafayette last week, as the Wildcats looked completely helpless at times. They surrendered five touchdowns to the Cajun offense, including four on the ground, and allowed 509 total yards. There is no question that Harrell and his Texas Tech teammates watched film of that game and plan to exploit the Wildcats' weaknesses.
