No. 20 Hokies handle Hilltoppers in Blacksburg

Blacksburg, VA (Sports Network) - Darren Evans had two rushing touchdowns as the 20th-ranked Virginia Tech Hokies downed the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers, 27-13, at Lane Stadium.

Evans had 21 carries for 79 yards while Tyrod Taylor went 10-for-15 with 125 yards and a score for the Hokies (5-1), who have won five straight after dropping their season opener. Taylor also had 30 yards on 10 carries.

"If you gave me a choice of being 5-1 after our first six games, I would haven taken that in a heartbeat, just with how young we are," said Virginia Tech head coach Frank Beamer. "Being 5-1 sounds pretty good, but we still have our work cut out for us."

Dexter Taylor had 14 carries for 96 yards while David Wolke went 7-for-19 with just 49 yards, one touchdown and one interception for the Hilltoppers (2-4), who have dropped their past two games.

After stopping the Hilltoppers on the first touch of the game, the Hokies marched down the field and had a 1st-and-goal, but a sack and a penalty forced them to take a 27-yard field goal from Dustin Keys for a 3-0 lead with 7:38 left in the first.

Virginia Tech limited Western Kentucky to a three-and-out on the ensuing possession and then took a 10-0 lead on a 27-yard pass from Tyrod Taylor to Greg Boone with a bit over two minutes left in the first.

The Hilltoppers got on the board on their next touch as Tanner Siewert booted a 48-yard field goal a little over a minute into the second frame to make it a 10-3 contest.

A 32-yard punt return by Victor Harris later in the second quarter gave Virginia Tech the ball at the Western Kentucky 38 and the team took advantage of the good field position as Evans punched the ball into the end zone from a yard out on 4th-and-goal for a 17-3 lead with just 25 ticks left in the half.

The Hokies weren't done, though, as Harris intercepted a Wolke pass and took it to the Hilltoppers' five-yard line, and, after a stab at the end zone fell incomplete, Keys hit a 22-yard field goal for a 20-3 lead at the break.

Virginia Tech started the third quarter with the ball and capped a 10-play, 72-yard drive on a two-yard touchdown run from Evans for a 27-3 advantage.

Western Kentucky, though, didn't go quietly and clawed its way back into the contest with a pair of scores.

A drive that started at their own 20 was finished by the Hilltoppers on a 24- yard field goal from Siewert to make it a 27-6 game with 30 seconds left in the third quarter.

The team then got a big play from its special teams as they recovered an onsides kick at their own 47. Later on a 3rd-and-goal play, Wolke connected with Tristan Jones on a touchdown strike to make it a 27-13 game a bit over three minutes into the fourth quarter.

However, Virginia Tech was able to keep Western Kentucky from putting any more points on the board and held on for the win.

Game Notes

It was Virginia Tech's 30th straight home victory against a non-league opponent...This was the first meeting ever between these two schools...Bobby Rainey had eight carries for 54 yards for Western Kentucky...Danny Coale had two catches for 34 yards for Virginia Tech...Hokies starting tailback Kenny Lewis Jr. ruptured his Achilles' tendon in the third quarter and will be out for the season.
