McCoy completed 23-of-30 passes and was intercepted twice. Chris Ogbonnaya caught six passes for 116 yards and a score, while adding 71 yards and a TD on the ground for the Longhorns (5-0, 1-0 Big 12), who were held under 40 points for the first time all season but still managed a convincing victory.
Cody Johnson added a pair of rushing scores for Texas, which has won three straight games against Colorado and remains unbeaten headed into next Saturday's Red River Rivalry game with top-ranked Oklahoma.
"We are going to enjoy the win and get back to work tomorrow for OU," said McCoy. "They're a good team and they deserve to be number one. We feel confident in our coaches and our team, but we have little things to correct."
Cody Hawkins and Matt Ballenger each threw a touchdown for the Buffaloes (3-2, 0-1), who have dropped two straight games.
"You have to score points, especially in the red zone," said Hawkins. "The most important thing for our offense is to put it in the end zone. Regardless of if we got the field goals or not, we weren't playing our best and weren't getting the job done."
Texas wasted little time in taking a lead. Less than two minutes into the game McCoy connected with Ogbonnaya on a 65-yard scoring strike for a 7-0 Longhorns lead.
Colorado then drove to the Texas 18, but kicker Aric Goodman missed the field goal as the visitors took over. The ensuing drive resulted in another Texas touchdown, as McCoy found Jordan Shipley in the end zone from 16 yards away. The score came with a little less than five minutes left in the stanza, and the Longhorns took the 14-0 lead into the second quarter.
Goodman missed another field goal shortly into the second stanza, from 43 yards out, and a third -- a 44-yarder -- on the Buffs' next touch. A series of punts led to Texas taking the ball at its own 34 with 4:52 left in the half.
The eight-play drive culminated in a 13-yard TD run from Ogbonnaya with 1:04 on the clock, and the Longhorns led 21-0 at the intermission.
Early in the third quarter, Hawkins fumbled and Texas recovered, taking over at the Colorado 18. It was three plays before Johnson plunged into the end zone from one yard out.
The Buffs at last got on the scoreboard later in the third, after McCoy was picked off by Cha'pelle Brown deep in Texas territory. Hawkins eventually connected with Jake Behrens for a seven-yard score to make it a 28-7 game with four minutes left in the quarter.
But Texas came right back. Ogbonnaya busted out on a 51-yard run several plays before Johnson's four-yard TD run put the Longhorns ahead 35-7.
Hunter Lawrence kicked a 46-yard field goal for Texas with 10:35 left in the game, and Ballenger found Patrick Williams for a 28-yard TD pass for the Buffs with 1:54 on the clock to complete the scoring.
Game Notes
