The Sooners (5-0) moved to the top spot last week and, after a 49-17 rout at Baylor, received 51 first-place votes -- eight more than last week -- and a total of 1,608 points from a nationwide media panel.
Alabama (6-0) survived with a 17-14 victory over Kentucky on Saturday and the lackluster effort swayed enough voters toward Oklahoma. The Crimson Tide lost eight first-place votes from last week and received only 13 to keep the second slot.
Missouri (5-0) swapped places with idle LSU (4-0). A 52-17 romp at Nebraska moved Missouri into third this week with one first-place vote.
Texas (5-0), Penn State (6-0) and Texas Tech (5-0) held their places at five, six and seven, while Southern California moved one spot to eighth and traded slots with BYU. Georgia was idle and took advantage of South Florida's loss to move back into the top 10. South Florida dropped a 26-21 home decision to Pittsburgh on Thursday and fell nine spots to 19th.
The second 10 consists of Florida, Ohio State, Vanderbilt, Utah, Boise State, Kansas, Oklahoma State, Virginia Tech, South Florida and Auburn. Vandy vaulted six spots after a 14-13 win over Auburn, which dropped seven places.
Wake Forest, North Carolina, Michigan State, Pittsburgh and Ball State are the last five teams ranked this week. The last four are newcomers, replacing Wisconsin, Fresno State, Oregon and Connecticut -- all losers over the weekend.
Ball State is ranked for the first time in school history. The Cardinals are 6-0 and off to their best start since winning their first nine games of the 1965 campaign.
North Carolina and Michigan State are also ranked for the first time this year, while Pittsburgh is back in the poll. The Panthers were 25th to start the season, but they have followed a season-opening loss to Bowling Green that knocked them out of the rankings with four straight wins.
Saturday's action features a top-five matchup between Oklahoma and Texas in the annual Red River Rivalry at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. Another Big 12 contest featuring top-25 teams pits Oklahoma State at Missouri, while the top SEC contest of the day takes place in the Swamp between Florida and LSU.
