The Sooners have ascended the national rankings and sit at the top of the heap thanks to five dominant victories, including last week's 49-17 rout at Baylor in the team's Big 12 opener. Bob Stoops' squad has made light work of all five opponents this season, boasting of a 35.8 ppg scoring margin.
Looking to close that gap a bit is the fifth-ranked Longhorns, who have been impressive in their own right, en route to a 5-0 start to the season. Mack Brown's team also opened league play with a lopsided victory, distancing itself from Colorado in Boulder last weekend, 38-14.
Texas holds a 57-40-5 advantage in the all-time series with Oklahoma, but the Sooners have won seven of the 12 meetings since the inception of the Big 12. This is the eighth time in this heated rivalry that Oklahoma comes in as the number one team in the nation. The only time the Sooners failed to protect that ranking was in the 1963 meeting, as the second-ranked Longhorns recorded a 28-7 win.
The significance of this rivalry is not lost on Coach Brown.
"It is a great rivalry. Rivalries are usually determined by the section of the country people live in. If you go talk to the Georgia and Florida people, they're going to talk about that rivalry and it's the only one. My experience is I've moved a lot, I've been around in college football, everybody thinks theirs is the only one. This is really big to us. It's really big to Oklahoma. I have been fortunate to be on both sides of this like Coach Royal and see what it means to both teams, and it's even bigger when both teams are really, really good like they are this year. It's good for college football and it's good for the Big 12 and this part of the country that both teams are really good this year and it should matchup to be a great game."
The Texas offense has been lethal this season, averaging 47.2 ppg, thanks to great balance that has led to a whopping 27.0 first downs per game. The rushing attack is generating 198.0 ypg, while the passing attack tacks on an additional 273.8 ypg.
The maturation of UT quarterback Colt McCoy under center has been one of the main reasons that Texas is in the position it is right now. McCoy is completing nearly 80 percent of his passes thus far, throwing for 1,280 yards, with 16 TDs against just three INTs. He is also the team's top rusher on the year, averaging 7.0 yards per attempt, with four more TDs.
Benefiting from McCoy's accuracy downfield are wideouts Quan Cosby (32 receptions, for 416 yards, three TDs) and Jordan Shipley (24 receptions, for 368 yards, seven TDs).
Defensively, the Longhorns will be put to the test this weekend against the Sooners, but there is every reason to believe that this stop unit will stand tall. Texas has yet to allow a rushing score on the year and is limiting opponents to a mere 51.8 yards rushing.
The pass defense is a little more forgiving (244.0 ypg), but big leads have forced foes to go to the air earlier than they would like. Still, when opponents do attempt to pass the ball, they have to face a feverish pass rush, led by All-American candidate Brian Orakpo up front. The veteran rush end has 19 stops on the year, but leads the team with six sacks.
Junior linebacker Roddrick Muckelroy has been all over the field, pacing the team in tackles with 40 stops, with two TFLs and one fumble recovery. Fellow LB Sergio Kindle is a distant second in terms of tackles (21), but has shown pass rushing skills (2.5 sacks).
The Oklahoma offense is every bit as lethal as the Texas offense and perhaps moreso, with sophomore QB Sam Bradford under center. Bradford leads an offense that is producing 49.6 ppg. The team's scoring prowess in due in large part to Bradford's arm. The 6-4 youngster has a ridiculous 204.97 passer rating thus far, completing 72.6 percent of his passes, for 1,665 yards, with 18 TDs and just three INTs.
Bradford was spectacular as a freshman in 2007, but Bob Stoops believes his young gunslinger has actually improved in 2008.
"I think he is overall better than last year. He is a quicker and stronger with the delivery. The ball is traveling faster and comes out quicker and it helps. I think that he is processing things quicker, not that he was ever slow with it, but still. I think the experience and confidence that he has now allows him to process everything faster. I think the confidence that we have in him to give him opportunities helps as well, because we trust him so much."
Bradford has plenty of options in the vertical game, led by wideouts Manuel Johnson (26 receptions, for 468 yards, five TDs), Juaquin Iglesias (23 receptions, for 401 yards, five TDs) and Jermaine Gresham (16 receptions, for 278 yards, four TDs).
Oklahoma is certainly not a one-dimensional offense, as the ground game is averaging 179.0 yards per game and has been responsible for 16 touchdowns thus far. Leading the charge in that department are tailbacks DeMarco Murray (5.1 ypc, five TDs) and Chris Brown (4.7 ypc, six TDs).
The Oklahoma defense has had its hand in the team reaching the top of the national polls as well. The Sooners are limiting opponents to just 13.8 ppg and have shown a real penchant for pass defense, holding foes to a meager 159.0 ypg through the air. In addition, this is a unit that likes to get up the field and disrupt things. The team has already amassed 42 TFLs and 17 sacks in the first five games.
Linebackers Ryan Reynolds (team-high 43 tackles), Travis Lewis (41 tackles, 5.0 TFLs, 3.5 sacks, one INT) and Keenan Clayton (40 tackles, 6.0 TFLs, 2.0 sacks) make plays all over the field. Standout defensive end Auston English (15 tackles, 6.0 TFLs, 2.5 sacks) is the player to watch up front, while safety Lendy Holmes (29 tackles, one INT) highlights the play in the secondary.
