No.7 Texas Tech holds off Huskers in OT, stays perfect

Lubbock, TX (Sports Network) - Eric Morris' one-yard touchdown run in overtime gave Texas Tech the lead, and Jamar Wall's interception sealed the 37-31 win for the seventh-ranked Red Raiders over Nebraska.

Graham Harrell completed 20-of-25 passes for 284 yards and two scores for Texas Tech (6-0, 2-0 Big 12) which blew a 14-point lead in the second half only to win in overtime. Michael Crabtree had five catches for 89 yards and two scores, and Baron Batch gained 97 yards on 10 carries for the Red Raiders, who came into the game with their highest ranking since being No. 5 in 1976.

Joe Ganz completed 36-of-44 passes for 349 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception for the Cornhuskers (3-3, 0-2) who nearly shocked Texas Tech a week after suffering their worst home loss in 53 years -- a 52-17 shellacking by Missouri.

Nevertheless the Huskers dropped their first two conference games for the first time in 40 years. Nebraska started 0-2 in the Big Eight in 1968.

After seeing Nebraska rally from down 14 and seven in the second half and tie the game with only 29 seconds left, the Red Raiders struck quickly in overtime. A screen pass to Batch netted 24 yards on the first play, and after being stopped twice from the one-yard-line, Texas Tech went with a quick handoff to Morris, who went in motion from left to right and turned in just inside the pylon for the go-ahead score.

The extra point was blocked, though, giving Nebraska a chance to win it with seven points. Ganz was pressured on second down, though, and tried to throw the ball away as he was being dragged down from behind. He didn't get enough on the pass, which went right to Wall at the 24-yard-line, who made the catch and ran out of bounds and onto the Tech sideline as the celebration began.

"I told Joe this, I told the football team this: that play did not lose us the football game," said Nebraska coach Bo Pelini. "There were a lot of plays out there for us to win the game. We would not have been in that situation without Joe Ganz. That play did not lose the football game. It never does."

After Nebraska erased a 24-10 deficit, the Red Raiders pushed back in front late in the fourth quarter. Harrell hit a wide-open Crabtree on 4th-and-5 from the Tech 36, and the 47-yard connection set up Harrell's one-yard sneak for a 31-24 lead with 2:21 left.

"There were a lot of things that didn't turn our way this game, but in the end it did," said Texas Tech coach Mike Leach. "When you are down quite a bit and things aren't going your direction you got to stick in there and our guys did that."

The Tech defense could not stop Ganz and the Huskers in the second half, though. Nebraska scored on all four of its second-half drives, the last a 17- yard touchdown pass from Ganz to Todd Peterson with 29 seconds left. The Huskers moved 79 yards on eight plays in only 1:52 to send the game to overtime, where Nebraska came up short.

The Huskers lost despite outgaining the Red Raiders 471-421, and dominating time of possession 40:12 to 19:48.

Crabtree and the Texas Tech offense struck first on his 35-yard TD catch on a screen with 4:49 to play in the first.

Nebraska answered with a 15-play, 74-yard scoring march to tie the game. Quentin Castille capped the drive with a four-yard TD run, knotting the game at 7-7 with 11:46 remaining in the half.

Batch burst through the Nebraska line for a 49-yard gain on the ensuing possession, but the Huskers defense held, forcing a 26-yard field goal by Donnie Carona with 8:13 to play in the half.

The Huskers stalled at the Texas Tech 30 on their next drive, and a 4th-and-1 run by Castille came up short. Texas Tech took over, and Harrell went over the top on the next play, a 56-yard connection to Edward Britton, down to the Nebraska 14. Three plays later Shannon Woods' four-yard TD run gave the Red Raiders a 17-7 lead with 1:18 left, and Texas Tech took the 10-point cushion into the half.

The Huskers opened the second half with a seven-minute drive, but came up short in the red zone. The 14-play, 75-yard drive stalled at the Texas Tech four, and Alex Henery's 21-yard field goal cut the deficit to seven points with eight minutes left in the third.

Again Harrell and the Red Raiders answered a methodical Nebraska march with a quick scoring drive. Moving 77 yards on seven plays, the Red Raiders scored on a four-yard Harrell toss to Crabtree, and took a 24-10 lead with 4:47 remaining in the quarter.

Another long Nebraska drive stalled near the Texas Tech end zone, but head coach Bo Pelini went with a trick play. The Huskers lined up for a field goal on 4th-and-7 at the Tech nine, but holder Jake Wesch rolled right and found Mike McNeill for an eight-yard gain to the one. Ganz snuck in on the next play to pull the Huskers within seven points early in the fourth quarter.

A 43-yard connection from Ganz to Nate Swift set up Dreu Young's two-yard TD catch, tying the game at 24-24 with 6:06 to play.

Game Notes

Texas Tech has won three straight over Nebraska. Texas Tech had lost all seven matchups against the Huskers prior to 2004, but the Red Raiders won 70-10 in Lubbock that year, then won 34-31 in Lincoln the following season...Nebraska was the last FBS team to play their first road game. The Huskers have dropped their last five away from home, stretching back to last season.
