Austin Pettis had four catches for 30 yards, but two of them went for scores for the Broncos (6-0), who have won both of the matchups in the all-time series between these two schools. Jeremy Childs had 10 grabs for 92 yards and a score in the win. Jeremy Avery and Ian Johnson both rushed for 56 yards.
Austin Davis had 160 yards with a pick on 15-of-34 passing for the Golden Eagles (2-4), who have dropped three straight games. Damion Fletcher had 14 carries for 69 yards and a score, while Gerald Baptiste had three catches for 53 yards in defeat.
"I thought Boise did a good job of getting pressure on us," said Southern Mississippi head coach Larry Fedora. "They got the safeties involved in stopping the run, and we couldn't make any plays over the top to get them out of the coverage."
Boise State got the ball at its own eight-yard line with 3:04 left in the opening stanza. An Avery 16-yard rush put the ball at the USM 39 as the first quarter expired.
Three plays later, Childs hauled in a screen pass from Moore and danced 28 yards down the right sideline and into the end zone for a Broncos touchdown, which made it 7-0 with 13:41 left in the half.
The Broncos then stuffed Davis on a 4th-and-1 quarterback sneak attempt to take over at the Eagles' 45. Moore hit Pettis in the back of the end zone for a five-yard TD to cap a seven-play, 45-yard drive. Johnson's 24-yard rush highlighted the possession that made it 14-0 with 8:22 left in the half.
"I was just trying to make something happen," Davis said. "They had a good defense and played hard."
Following an onsides kick, Kyle Brotzman added a 32-yard field goal not even two minutes later to make it a 17-point game.
Fletcher's 17-yard TD scamper capped an eight-play, 55-yard drive that pulled Southern Mississippi within 17-7 with just over three minutes left in the half.
Moore hit Pettis for a four-yard score with under a minute showing on the clock to give the Broncos a 17-point lead heading into the half.
Neither team put any points up in the third quarter, but the Golden Eagles forced a punt and took over at their own 36 with 8:18 left in the game.
Davis hit Baptiste for a 30-yard gain down to the Boise State 34 on the first play. However, the team was unable to move the chains further and turned the ball over on downs.
Game Notes
Boise State is the only nationally-ranked team hailing from the Western Athletic Conference...Davis was sacked three times and Moore only once.
