Texas outguns Oklahoma in Red River Shootout

Dallas, TX (Sports Network) - Colt McCoy directed a pair of fourth-quarter drives that ended in short scoring runs by Cody Johnson, as fifth-ranked Texas captured the 103rd edition of the Red River Rivalry with a 45-35 victory over No. 1 Oklahoma at the Cotton Bowl.

Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford had the better numbers, throwing for 387 yards with five touchdowns, but McCoy wasn't too shabby either. He connected on 28-of-35 passes for 277 yards with one touchdown, and added 31 yards to Texas' ground attack that churned out 161 yards.

Johnson finished with three short touchdown runs, while Chris Ogbonnaya did the heavy running with 127 yards on 15 carries for Texas (6-0, 2-0 Big 12), which has won three of the last four meetings and could be in line for the No. 1 ranking next week.

"Neither team gave up and neither team quit," said Texas head coach Mack Brown. "I'm really, really proud of our guys. It was a great football game."

Bradford completed 28-of-39 passes for Oklahoma (5-1, 1-1), which was unable to stop Texas at critical moments and saw the game turn on a trick play that came up just short.

Oklahoma, leading 28-27 late in the third quarter, faced 4th-and-6 from its own 48. Punter Mike Knall took off in attempt to get the first down, but was stopped just short of the marker and Texas took over.

McCoy quickly put his team into scoring range with an 18-yard run on the first play, as a personal foul penalty pushed the ball to the Oklahoma 20. The drive stalled at the 11 and Hunter Lawrence kicked a 28-yard field goal to give Texas its first lead of the day, 30-28, with 1:04 left in the third.

The Sooners were again forced to punt in the first minute of the fourth quarter, but a five-yard penalty for running into the kicker gave Oklahoma a first down. Bradford took advantage and threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Manuel Johnson. The Sooners were about to try for two, but a false start penalty pushed them back and they decided to kick the extra point for a 35-30 edge with 11:42 remaining.

McCoy then engineered an eight-play drive for the go-ahead score. After a 12- yard run by Ogbonnaya put the ball at midfield, McCoy went to the air and completed four straight passes. The last was a 37-yard toss to Jordan Shipley, who was taken down just short of the goal line. Johnson followed with a one- yard touchdown run on the next play and McCoy hit Quan Cosby with a two-point conversion pass to give the Longhorns a 38-35 edge with 7:37 to play.

The Oklahoma offense came up empty on the next series, as Bradford threw incomplete on 3rd-and-2 from the OU 46 and the Sooners elected to punt.

Texas quickly faced third down, but McCoy found Ogbonnaya out of the backfield for 10 yards and a first down. Ogbonnaya then took a handoff on the next play and rumbled 62 yards down the right sideline to the Oklahoma two-yard line. Johnson reached the end zone for the third time on the day two plays later to increase the Texas cushion to 10 points with 4:02 remaining.

"Probably should have [gone for it]," said Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops about the decision to punt. "[It was] just one of those situations, there's so much time you think you can come up with a stop. [We] went for it one other time and we didn't get it, so I thought we would stop them and get it back."

Oklahoma's next possession ended at the Texas 39 with a fourth-down incomplete pass and the Sooners got the ball one last time in the final minute, but Bradford's last desperation heave was intercepted in the back of the end zone as time expired.

"Give Texas' defense credit, they came up with some big stops," said Stoops. "They did a better job down the stretch when they had to."

The offensive showcase featured a total of 873 yards, as Texas racked up 438 and Oklahoma countered with 435.

The Sooners, though, managed only 48 yards rushing, 29 from Chris Brown. Manuel Johnson hauled in three of Bradford's scoring passes and finished with six catches for 85 yards. Juaquin Iglesias had seven receptions for 92 yards in defeat.

"It's a factor," Stoops remarked about the lack of a running game. "It is disappointing not being able to run the football."

Shipley led Texas with 11 catches for 112 yards and also scored on a kickoff return. Cosby added nine receptions for 122 yards.

The Sooners took the opening kickoff and marched 80 yards in eight plays for a touchdown. A 34-yard pass to DeMarco Murray out of the backfield keyed the series and Bradford finished it with a five-yard scoring pass to Manuel Johnson, who caught the ball at the goal line near the left sideline. It appeared as though Johnson's knee hit the ground before the ball crossed the plane of end zone, but there was no review before the extra point.

Texas followed with a drive to the Oklahoma 10-yard line, but it stalled and Lawrence drilled a 26-yard field goal to make it 7-3.

The defenses took over until early in the second quarter when the Sooners mounted another scoring march.

Bradford directed an eight-play, 74-yard series that ended with fluke score. From the Texas eight-yard line, Bradford threw short of the goal line to Jermaine Gresham, who never fully gained control. He was hit at the two-yard line and the ball caromed into the waiting hands of Ryan Broyles in the end zone for the touchdown and a 14-3 lead with 13:14 left in the first half.

Momentum swung back to Texas on the ensuing kickoff, however, as Shipley returned it 96 yards for a touchdown. Shipley broke through the initial wave, then found clear space along the right sideline on his way to the end zone.

Oklahoma answered immediately with a big play, as Gresham was left alone along the left sideline. He caught a 15-yard pass from Bradford and raced untouched until reaching the end zone for a 52-yard score and a 21-10 edge.

The Texas offense finally reached the end zone on the next series, driving 80 yards in 12 plays to pull within four. McCoy hit each of his five throws during the set before Cody Johnson took a pitch on 3rd-and-goal from the one and barely crossed the goal line near the right pylon with 3:41 left in the half.

Bradford was picked off on a deep throw soon after, as Earl Thomas made a diving interception at the Texas 33-yard line. The Longhorns still had nearly three minutes before the break and took advantage of the turnover to add a field goal.

A 36-yard connection from McCoy to Cosby on the first play put Texas into Oklahoma territory and a personal foul call on a sack pushed the Longhorns closer for Lawrence, who connected from 33 yards away on the final play of the half to make it a 21-20 game.

Both quarterbacks were brilliant in the first half, as Bradford threw for 214 yards on 15-of-18 passing and McCoy hit on 15-of-19 throws for 171 yards.

Texas went three-and-out to start the second half and Oklahoma followed with a touchdown on its first possession. A 30-yard pass from Bradford to Manuel Johnson on 3rd-and-4 helped set up a 14-yard scoring connection between the two, giving the Sooners a 28-20 advantage.

Back came the Longhorns with an 89-yard drive for a touchdown. McCoy completed each of his six passes during the 12-play march, including a two-yard scoring toss in the back of the end zone to Shipley on third down.

"It was a game where every time someone made a play, [the other team] got excited," Brown added. "I thought it was one of the greatest football games I've ever seen."

Game Notes

Texas leads the all-time series 58-40-5...This was the 10th matchup between the two when both were ranked in the top-five. Oklahoma is 5-4-1 in those meetings...This marked the eighth time Oklahoma brought the No. 1 ranking into the contest and only the second time the Sooners left the field with a loss. The previous Texas victory over a No. 1 Oklahoma squad came in 1963...The Sooners will try to regroup next week at home against Kansas, while the Longhorns will host Missouri next Saturday...Oklahoma junior linebacker Ryan Reynolds will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a torn ACL in the third quarter.
