Top-ranked Texas welcomes 11th-ranked Missouri to Austin

Austin, TX (Sports Network) - After knocking the Oklahoma Sooners from their perch atop the national polls, the Texas Longhorns will attempt to avoid the same, as they welcome the 11th-ranked Missouri Tigers to Austin for a key Big 12 matchup.

Mack Brown's team outlasted a talented Oklahoma squad in Dallas last weekend and posted a 45-35 victory over the previously unbeaten Sooners and in the process, took over the top spot in the top-25. The 6-0 Longhorns are 2-0 in league play now, tied with Oklahoma State and Texas Tech atop the South Division standings.

Brown is happy with his team's current position, but knows there is a lot of season left.

"Being ranked No. 1 shows respect for what we've accomplished through the early part of the season, but nobody really knows who is No. 1 at this point. Our team has just played well for six weeks and we know more about where we are today than we did last Sunday, but we have a long way to go and a lot of room to improve. Every week, we're seeing teams learn the hard way that the only poll that matters, or lasts, is the final one. No one remembers who was No. 1 after six weeks last year. If we're No. 1 in late January, it becomes a statement."

The Tigers were another one of the Big 12's undefeated teams coming into last weekend, but unlike the Longhorns, Missouri failed in its bid to stay that way, as the Tigers fell to Oklahoma State in Columbia, 28-23. There is reason for optimism coming into this contest though, as Missouri is a perfect 7-0 under head coach Gary Pinkel in the game following its first loss of the season.

Texas leads the all-time series with Missouri, 15-5 and has won four straight and five of the six meetings since the inception of the Big 12 in 1996. MU's only wins in Austin took place in 1894 and 1896.

Despite getting a huge outing from Heisman hopeful Chase Daniel, the Tigers were unable to keep pace with the tough OSU Cowboys and were dealt a five- point loss at home. Daniel completed 39-of-52 pass attempts, for 390 yards, but had just one TD, while throwing three costly interceptions. The miscues are not commonplace for Daniel, who had just one INT coming into the game.

The senior signal caller has played lights out for the most part, completing 76 percent of his passes, for 2,055 yards, with 16 TDs. His two top targets in the vertical game are tight end Chase Coffman (44 receptions, for 554 yards, three TDs) and All-American wideout Jeremy Maclin (39 receptions, for 600 yards, five TDs).

The ground game is not an afterthought, averaging 171.7 yards per game. The top performer on the ground is tailback Derrick Washington, who is averaging 6.8 yards per carry in 2008 and is responsible for 11 of the team's 16 rushing scores to date.

Washington is excited for this game, albeit with the Tigers playing a vastly different role in this one.

"For the first time in a long time, we're going to be the underdog going into a game. We're going to be looking forward to that, and that will fire us up. Especially coming off of a loss, there is going to be a lot of emotion in this game."

The Tigers' defense is a step or two behind the offense in terms of production and it showed against the Cowboys, who rolled up 402 yards of offense on the day.

Still, this is a unit that has the ability to make plays, with 12 takeaways and 15 sacks in the first six games. Junior linebacker Sean Weatherspoon has been all over the field in the first half of the season, leading the team in total tackles (65), TFLs (10) and INTs (three), with 2.5 sacks to boot. The 6-2, 245-pounder is second in the Big 12 and sixth nationally with 10.83 stops per game.

Rush ends Stryker Sulak and Tommy Chavis have formed a solid tandem coming off the edges, combining for 12.5 TFLs and seven sacks. Senior free safety William Moore (32 tackles) had a strong outing against the Cowboys, finishing with 10 tackles, two TFLs and a forced fumble. Strong safety Justin Garrett (41 tackles) adds to the strong play in the secondary.

Texas QB Colt McCoy and WR Jason Shipley picked up All-Big 12 weekly honors this week, as both were instrumental in leading the Longhorns to the 10-point win over Oklahoma. McCoy completed 28-of-35 passes, for 277 yards and one TD, with no interceptions. His top target was Shipley, who finished with 11 catches, for 112 yards and one TD. He also returned a kickoff 96 yards for a second score.

It has been a lethal offense that has fueled Texas' strong start. The Longhorns are averaging a robust 46.8 ppg, on 466.2 yards of total offense. McCoy has been outstanding and has to be in the mix in terms of Heisman talk. He has completed nearly 80 percent of his passes thus far, for 1,557 yards, with 17 TDs and just three picks. McCoy is also tops on the rushing list, with 348 yards and an additional four scores.

The receiving tandem of Quan Cosby (41 receptions, for 538 yards, three TDs) and Shipley (35 receptions, for 480 yards, eight TDs) have been highly productive and extremely difficult to contain.

The Sooners lit up the Longhorn secondary last week and that has really been the only chink in the Texas defensive armor this year. The team is allowing an alarming 267.8 yards passing per outing, but that has a lot to do with the fact that opposing ground games have found the going very tough, with UT limiting foes to a mere 51.2 ypg, on 1.9 yards per carry.

Roddrick Muckelroy is far and away the top performer in terms of total tackles this season, with 56 stops on the year. Three others are tied for second in stops with 26. All-American candidate Brian Orakpo, who is one of those players with 26 tackles, has been a real force in opposing backfields, leading Texas with 12 TFLs and eight sacks.
