Pete Carroll's Trojans are still very much in the hunt for an unprecedented seventh straight Pac-10 crown at 2-1 in league play. The Trojans dropped their conference opener at Oregon State on September 25th (27-21), but have made the next two opponents pay the price, routing both Oregon (44-10) and Arizona State (28-0) in consecutive outings.
The Cougars reside in the conference cellar at 0-4 and are just 1-6 on the year overall. WSU was one the road for the last two games and was no match for both UCLA (28-3) and Oregon State (66-13) in lopsided losses.
USC has dominated the series, boasting of 55-8-4 all-time advantage. The Trojans have won the last five matchups, with WSU posting its last series win in 2002. USC has also won 32 of the last 36 meetings, overall.
The Trojans overcame a sloppy performance by QB Mark Sanchez to earn a shutout of the Sun Devils last time out. Sanchez completed just 13-of-26 passes, for 179 yards with three interceptions. Tailback Joe McKnight was much more productive, churning out 143 yards on just 11 carries (13.0 ypc).
Sanchez has been more reliable on the season, completing 63.7 percent of his passes, for 1,248 yards, with 14 TDs. He has a number of talented pass catchers down the field, led by Damian Williams (22 receptions, for 333 yards, five TDs).
McKnight has performed well when given the ball, averaging a healthy 7.7 yards per carry. However, he is still without a rushing score on the year.
Defensively, the Trojans really dominated Arizona State last time out, allowing the Sun Devils just 75 yards rushing and 154 yards passing in the shutout.
That has been more of the norm for this defense, as USC's numbers on this side of the football are impressive. The Trojans are limiting foes to just 9.4 ppg, while treating both the run (82.8 ypg) and the pass (158.2 ypg) with equal disdain.
The top playmakers on this unit reside in the back seven, starting with strong safety Kevin Ellison (team-high 40 tackles, one INT). Linebackers Brian Cushing (33 tackles, 5.0 TFLs, 1.5 sacks) and Rey Maualuga (27 tackles, one INT) highlight the play in the middle of the field.
Washington State's offense didn't need any more bad news, but the team lost redshirt freshman QB Marshall Lobbestael for the season with a knee injury suffered against Oregon State. Lobbestael had taken over under center for starter Gary Rogers, who suffered a cervical spine fracture against Portland State earlier this year.
Junior QB Kevin Lopina will get the nod the rest of the way, if he can stay in one piece. He will be saddled with an offense that is putting up a mere 15.9 ppg this year. The team has struggled to move the football, averaging a mere 274.4 yards of total offense.
There aren't many weapons on this side of the football for Washington State, although WR Brandon Gibson (38 receptions, for 486 yards, two TDs) is certainly a reliable target and has still found a way to produce.
The WSU defense has been tortured for the most part this season, including giving up 66 points to Oregon State last week. That certainly hasn't helped the team's overall defensive numbers. The Cougars are now giving up an alarming 45.1 ppg, getting particularly abused on the ground to the tune of 252.6 yards per game, on 6.6 yards per carry. The team has also failed to make big plays, with just six sacks and nine takeaways in the first seven games.
Senior middle linebacker Greg Trent currently leads the team in tackles (46), with 5.5 TFLs, one sack and one INT.
The Trojans are clearly the superior team in this one, but Pete Carroll will take nothing for granted and believes his team needs to improve all around.
"I don't feel like we've played with the kind of consistency that we're capable of in a number of areas, so we're going to try to get these things shored up over the next few weeks and maybe make a big push here."
