Under head coach Jim Tressel, the Buckeyes are 31-10 overall and 10-5 on the road against ranked teams. They are currently riding a four-game win streak since suffering their only loss of the season to USC in blowout fashion. Last weekend, the Ohio State defense was stellar in a 16-3 victory over Purdue in Columbus.
As for Michigan State, it has posted six consecutive victories since falling narrowly to Cal in the opener. The Spartans beat up on a solid Northwestern squad last weekend, 37-20, and have also knocked off Notre Dame and Iowa during the current streak.
Ohio State owns a commanding 26-12 series lead over Michigan State, which includes victories in each of the last six meetings.
Last week, Purdue focused on containing Ohio State's freshman quarterback, Terrelle Pryor, and was able to hold the Buckeyes to 16 points. "They definitely had a great game plan and did a nice job of keeping him (Pryor) in the box," said senior offensive lineman Steve Rehring. "We didn't execute as well as we could have and I think that had a lot to do with how well their defense played."
The Buckeyes finished the contest with 222 total yards, including just 97 yards through the air. They were just 4-of-14 on third down conversion attempts, but the fact that they didn't commit a single turnover in the clash certainly helped to secure the win. Chris "Beanie" Wells ran for 94 yards on 22 carries to pace Ohio State.
Overall this season, the Buckeyes are scoring 24.3 ppg while gaining 320.9 total ypg, modest numbers that can certainly be improved, especially considering the talent in place on offense. Wells is a force at the tailback position, as he has rushed for 479 yards in the four games he has played. Pryor has run for 339 yards and four touchdowns while also passing for 537 yards and five scores. In seven games, the rookie has completed 65.8 percent of his passes with only two interceptions, and he has shown a great deal of maturity. There is no shortage of talent at wideout, and Brian Robiskie leads the way with 24 catches for 232 yards and four scores.
One of the biggest plays for Ohio State against Purdue was made by freshman linebacker Etienne Sabino, who reached the end zone on a blocked punt return. "You come to a school like this so that you can have a chance to make a difference and make an impact," said Sabino. "It's really great to be able to do that and hear all the fans after the play."
The Buckeyes held the Boilermakers to 298 total yards and forced them into a pair of turnovers that proved key to the victory. Ohio State surrendered a mere 70 rushing yards on 27 attempts, and while Purdue did pass for 228 yards, the team needed 51 attempts to reach that mark.
Opponents are scoring 14.3 ppg while gaining 269.0 total ypg against the Buckeyes, who have played extremely well defensively with the exception of the loss to USC on the road. Foes are only averaging 8.8 yards per pass completion and 3.6 yards per rushing attempt. James Laurinaitis leads the defense with 67 tackles, 22 more than his closest teammate.
Michigan State relies heavily on Javon Ringer, and the talented tailback continues to move the chains and score touchdowns. He has reached the end zone 14 times already and has 247 carries in seven outings, an average of 35 per contest. Ringer has rushed for 1,112 yards and is certainly in the Heisman discussion. Brian Hoyer, the team's quarterback, has only completed 50.3 percent of his passes, but he has thrown for 1,314 yards and six touchdowns against three interceptions. He injured his shoulder last time out but is expected to play versus the Buckeyes. The top receiver on the squad is Mark Dell, who has made the most of his 20 catches by racking up 443 yards and two scores. Dell was hurt last game and is listed as questionable for Saturday's tilt. Michigan State is averaging 29.7 ppg and 368.9 total ypg, solid numbers that have to potential to get even better.
Against Northwestern last weekend, Ringer racked up 124 yards and two touchdowns. He only averaged 3.5 yards per carry, but MSU's commitment to the run enabled it to control the clock and keep the Northwestern offense off the field. "My offensive line and I knew we had our work cut out for us, and knew they would bring a lot of guys into the box," said Ringer after the contest. "All the credit goes to my offensive line, they were able to continue to produce and created the holes I needed to keep moving the ball down the field."
Hoyer completed 14-of-20 passes for 169 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions.
Defensively, Michigan State is holding opponents to 16.7 ppg and 361.9 total ypg, but there is clearly room for improvement. The Spartans are yielding 4.5 yards per rushing attempt and 11.5 yards per pass completion, both of which are rather high. Fortunately, the club has intercepted nine passes, recovered seven fumbles and posted 11 sacks, so the big plays have certainly helped the cause. Greg Jones paces Michigan State with 52 total tackles, including 5.5 TFLs. Otis Wiley has four interceptions and a forced fumble, so keep an eye on him as well. When it comes to pressuring the quarterback, Todd Anderson has registered five sacks.
Northwestern racked up 459 total yards against Michigan State last weekend and was 15-of-24 on third down conversion attempts, impressive to say the least. The Spartans yielded 5.5 ypc on the ground, but they did come up with three takeaways that proved to be keys to the victory.
