South Florida built a 21-13 halftime lead, then outscored the Orange 24-0 in the second half. The USF defense held Syracuse without a first down over the final 30 minutes.
Grothe completed 19-of-26 passes for 248 yards and ran for a team-high 72 yards on just 10 carries for South Florida (6-1, 1-1 Big East), which had a bye last week after dropping a 26-21 decision to Pittsburgh on October 2.
"We did have a little more time to game plan," said USF head coach Jim Leavitt. "We didn't spend as much time as you would think on Syracuse. We spent more time on the University of South Florida. We really felt that we played poorly the week before. We tried to get ourselves together."
Curtis Brinkley ran for 112 yards and a touchdown for Syracuse (1-6, 0-3), which has lost three in a row. The Orange were competitive in losses to Pittsburgh and West Virginia the past two games, then played the Bulls tight for 30 minutes only to watch it all fall apart after halftime.
After a promising USF drive to start the second half was halted by a fumble inside the Syracuse 20, the Bulls forced an Orange turnover midway through the third quarter. Syracuse quarterback Cameron Dantley was stripped of the ball inside the 10-yard line and Craig Marshall returned the fumble to the one.
The Syracuse defense left A.J. Love uncovered on the next play and Grothe had an easy one-yard scoring toss to the wide open receiver for a 28-13 edge.
South Florida got the ball right back after a Syracuse three-and-out, and marched 74 yards on 10 plays for another touchdown. Grothe and Mike Ford combined for five carries to start the march and the Bulls went to the air from there, with Grothe finding Taurus Johnson for a nine-yard score and a 35-13 cushion with just 12 seconds to play in the period.
Maikon Bonani tacked on a 31-yard field goal early in the fourth and Richard Kelly capped a drive of nearly eight minutes with a two-yard touchdown run with 1:39 remaining to account for the final margin.
Syracuse managed just nine yards of offense in the second half and finished the game with 230 while South Florida racked up 487. The Orange actually outgained South Florida 221-212 in the first half, but still went into the locker room trailing.
"I want to give credit to Syracuse," Leavitt added. "They were able to keep the ball away from our offense [in the first half]. They moved the chains with the short passing game and the running game. They were doing a good job of it. Our offense did a good job when we had the ball, to score."
The Bulls took their first possession 62 yards for a touchdown to grab a 7-0 lead. Grothe completed each of his three passes and added a pair of carries that totaled 16 yards before Benjamin Williams found a hole through the middle of the line for a one-yard touchdown run six minutes into the contest.
Syracuse took over on its own 40 after a kickoff out of bounds and plays of 13 and 17 yards enabled Patrick Shadle to kick a 43-yard field goal.
Back came South Florida with another scoring march. A pass interference penalty early helped the Bulls move from their own 18-yard line and a 17-yard carry by Ford pushed the ball to midfield. Grothe soon after found Carlton Mitchell with a 40-yard connection to the Syracuse seven, then on third down lofted a pass into the end zone to Johnson for a seven-yard score and a 14-3 lead with 2:09 to play in the opening quarter.
The Orange answered with a four-play series for a touchdown. Dantley threw a 10-yard pass to Mike Owen, then hit Marcus Sales on a slant that turned into a 28-yard pickup. After Brinkley ran for 11 yards and South Florida jumped offside, Brinkley raced through the left side of the Bulls defense untouched for a 24-yard scoring run on the first play of the second quarter to pull Syracuse within four.
Following a trade of punts, Grothe directed an 80-yard march for another touchdown. He completed each of his four passes on the six-play series and finished it with an 11-yard run up the middle into the end zone for a 21-10 cushion with 3:24 to play before the intermission.
Syracuse still had time and responded with a 24-yard field goal by Shadle in the closing seconds. Brinkley's 35-yard run to the South Florida 16 keyed the drive. He finished the opening half with 106 yards on 14 carries.
Game Notes
Ford finished with 51 yards on 11 carries for South Florida...Dantley threw for 129 yards on 11-of-27 passing for Syracuse, which has lost each of its four meetings with South Florida...The Orange will take next week off before hosting Louisville on November 1...South Florida will visit Louisville next Saturday.
