Louks leads Utah in rout of Colorado St.

Salt Lake City, UT (Sports Network) - Backup quarterback Corbin Louks rushed for 109 yards and two touchdowns on only five carries, leading an impressive rushing attack as 14th-ranked Utah stayed unbeaten with a 49-16 shellacking of Colorado State.

Louks also completed the only pass he attempted, for a 37-yard gain, as he displayed his dual-threat abilities that make him a perfect change of pace.

Matt Asiata also had two rushing touchdowns, on eight carries for 41 yards, as the Utes rolled to 327 rushing yards on the overmatched Rams defense. Brian Johnson completed 18-of-26 passes for 185 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception for Utah (8-0, 4-0 Mountain West), which is four wins away from an undefeated regular season.

Utah's two biggest challenges the rest of the way will likely come from TCU and BYU, but both of those games will also be in Salt Lake City.

Billy Farris completed 19-of-33 passes for 166 yards with one touchdown and one interception for Colorado State (3-4, 1-2), which has dropped three of four. Gartrell Johnson rushed for 95 yards on 20 carries, and Dion Morton had a touchdown reception for the Rams.

Jason Smith's 52-yard field goal pulled Colorado State within 28-16 with 7:36 left, but then the Utah offense pulled away. Chaz Walker's interception set the Utes up at their 49-yard-line, and Louks burst through for a 21-yard touchdown run, finishing off the quick five-play drive, as Utah took a 35-16 lead with 2:20 to play in the third.

Jereme Brooks iced the win when he rumbled 34 yards, leaping just inside the right pylon for the touchdown to give Utah a 42-16 advantage with 14:11 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Louks added to the blowout with his winding 69-yard touchdown run, in which he reversed field from right to left on the way to the end zone. The run, a career-long for Louks, gave Utah a 33-point edge with 9:30 to play.

The Rams sent in Grant Stucker at quarterback late in the fourth, but the backup could not produce another score.

The Utes hit the ground running in the first. Johnson completed 4-of-4 passes on the game-opening drive, a six-play, 60-yard drive capped by a 32-yard touchdown strike to Freddie Brown with 12:38 left in the first. Brown finished with 78 yards on four receptions.

Colorado State answered, though, with a 10-play, 80-yard march. A 42-yard connection from Farris to Rashard Greer was the big play on the drive, and Farris' 29-yard TD pass to Morton tied the game with 7:59 to play in the quarter.

Not to be outdone, the Utes grinded out 79 yards on 10 plays, and Asiata's three-yard scoring plunge put Utah back on top 14-7 with 2:46 remaining.

Smith hit two field goals in the second quarter, a 25-yarder with seven minutes left and a 38-yarder as time expired, but two Utah touchdowns gave the Utes a 28-13 lead at the half. Asiata had another three-yard scoring run with 4:09 left, and David Reed hauled in a Johnson pass down the left sideline for a 33-yard catch-and-run score with 1:18 left.

Game Notes

Reed gained 73 yards on three catches...Utah has won five of six against Colorado State and leads 53-22-2 overall (31-8-2 in Salt Lake City) in the series...The Rams have not toppled a ranked opponent since beating Colorado on August 31, 2002 when the Buffaloes were ranked seventh. They have dropped four straight to top-25 teams since...Despite outrushing Colorado State 327-110, the Utes lost the time of possession battle -- 32:24 to 27:36.
