Turner leads Maryland to rout of No. 21 Wake Forest

College Park, MD (Sports Network) - Chris Turner completed 28-of-41 passes for 321 yards and a touchdown, and Maryland knocked off another top-25 team with a 26-0 thumping of No. 21 Wake Forest.

Darrius Heyward-Bey had 11 catches for 101 yards and a score, and Danny Oquendo had a 50-yard touchdown catch for the Terrapins (5-2, 2-1 ACC), who rebounded from a 31-0 loss at Virginia on October 4 with their third win over a ranked opponent this season.

"I think we finally put a whole game together," said Maryland head coach Ralph Friedgen. "I think this is by far the best we've played all year. I think they really took some ownership in this and kind of were embarrassed by the way we played against Virginia."

Obi Egekeze made four field goals for Maryland, which also beat then-No. 23 California on September 13, and then-No. 20 Clemson on September 27.

Da' Rel Scott gained 79 yards on 18 carries and threw a touchdown pass for Maryland, which held Wake Forest to 219 yards. Maryland churned out 470 yards in the win.

Riley Skinner completed 14-of-30 passes for 127 yards for the Demon Deacons (4-2, 2-1). Josh Adams was held to 41 yards on 13 carries, and D.J. Boldin led Wake Forest receivers with 72 yards on seven grabs.

"We didn't play very well, and that's the bottom line," said Wake Forest head coach Jim Grobe. "I am disappointed we didn't play better. I didn't think we kicked the ball very well, I didn't think we played defense as well as we are capable, we gave up some good plays. So overall this was just a solid team loss."

The Terps offense set the tone early after having a bye week to mull over its first shutout loss in four years. Torrey Smith took the opening kick 34 yards to the Maryland 42, and the Terps offense went to work. Scott almost killed the drive at the Wake Forest 25 when he fumbled, but he was able to fall on the ball.

Two plays later Scott found the ball in his hands again, but this time he dropped back and looked to pass. Scott found Heyward-Bey open in the end zone, and the Maryland receiver made the leaping catch for a nine-yard touchdown reception with 10:59 left in the first.

Scott fumbled again later in the quarter, and this time Wake Forest recovered at the Maryland 25-yard-line. The Deacons offense couldn't take advantage, though, as a two-yard loss was followed by two incompletions, and backup kicker Shane Popham missed the 40-yard field goal attempt wide right.

Popham filled in for Sam Swank, one of the nation's best kickers, who missed the game with a quad injury.

Scott fumbled again early in the second quarter, and Wake Forest took over at the Terrapins 30. Again the offense couldn't turn the great field position into points, as three Skinner incompletions led to another miss by Popham, this time from 47 yards out.

Egekeze started his day off with a 40-yard make with 6:41 to play in the second quarter. Turner then led a 19-play, 52-yard drive that stalled at the Wake 22, and Egekeze made a 39-yard field to push Maryland's lead to 13-0 with four seconds left in the half.

The Wake Forest offense continued to struggle in the second half, while Egekeze kept adding to the Maryland lead. His 35-yard field goal made it 16-0 with 9:35 left in the third quarter. An 11-play, 72-yard Maryland drive ran out of steam at the Wake nine, and Egekeze banged in a 26-yarder for a 19- point lead late in the third, his ninth consecutive made field goal after missing five straight to start the season.

Oquendo provided the exclamation point to the rout late in the fourth. The Maryland offense took a break from running the clock out to go over the top to Oquendo on a comeback route, and he turned back and broke three tackles for a 50-yard catch-and-run score, pushing the Terps ahead 26-0 with 4:33 remaining.

Game Notes

Maryland has won five straight over ranked teams, including wins over No. 8 Boston College and No. 10 Rutgers in 2007. The Terps may be able to add to that list later this season, as Virginia Tech and North Carolina are currently ranked and on Maryland's schedule...The Terps improved to 41-15-1 in the all- time series, Maryland's best winning percentage (.719) against any ACC school...Wake Forest has never started an ACC slate 3-0.
