Montel Harris gained 61 yards on 15 touches with a score for the Eagles (5-1, 2-1 ACC), who have won four straight tilts. James McCluskey added a two-yard TD run, while Ifeanyi Momah had three catches for 57 yards and a score. Brandon Robinson had four catches for 97 yards in the win.
Tyrod Taylor had 90 yards through the air, with a pick, on 12-of-27 passing, but added 110 rushing yards on 15 carries for Virginia Tech (5-2, 2-1), which saw its five-game win streak come to an end. Danny Coale led all Hokies receivers with 28 yards on four grabs.
Down 28-23 with no timeouts, the Hokies got the ball back at their own 29- yard-line with 1:08 on the clock. Taylor rushed for a one-yard loss on first down and threw an incomplete pass on second. A 10-yard completion to Dustin Pickle on third set up a 4th-and-1, but Taylor's pass to Dyrell Roberts fell incomplete with 14 ticks left.
"That 4th-and-1 was a huge stop," BC head coach Jeff Jagodzinski said. "They played hard. They played very hard. I'm happy for those guys. That quarterback (Taylor) is a special player. We tried to contain him. We did okay."
BC took over and was able to run out the clock to secure the victory.
"It just comes down to the execution and we didn't execute tonight," Virginia Tech head coach Frank Beamer said. "We had too many missed opportunities. There were too many chances for us to come back that we didn't take advantage of."
The Hokies wasted no time in getting on the board. On BC's first possession, Brett Warren picked off Crane and took it back 36 yards to the end zone for a 7-0 lead not even two minutes into the game.
On the ensuing kickoff, Pickle put a hit on Jeff Smith that jarred the ball loose and Quillie Odom recovered on the Eagles 29. Virginia Tech stalled at the 13-yard line and settled for a 30-yard field goal from Dustin Keys to take a 10-0 lead with 9 1/2 minutes left in the first.
The Eagles showed signs of life on their next drive as Crane orchestrated a 13-play, 83-yard trek that resulted in a six-yard touchdown run from Harris. The score brought BC within 10-7 with 4:08 left in the opening stanza.
Later in the second quarter, Virginia Tech was facing 4th-and-3 from its own 15. Brent Bowden then booted a 50-yard punt which Rich Gunnell received and juked his way 65 yards down the middle of the field and towards the right sideline all the way to paydirt to give BC the lead, 14-10, with 9:08 left in the half.
BC forced a three-and-out on the following drive and took over at its own 46. Harris started the drive with a three-yard run before a couple of receptions from Momah -- a 41-yarder and a 10 yard TD -- made it 21-10 with 6:43 left in the half.
A 55-yard interception return for a touchdown by Victor Harris pulled the Hokies within 21-17 with 1:39 showing on the clock.
BC answered with a quick five-play, 75-yard drive in 1:12 that was closed out with a two-yard TD run from McCluskey, making it 28-17 heading into the half.
"Starting off, spotting them 10 points is never good," Crane said. "We also went out and scored 28 first half points and established the lead. With all the mistakes we made, we still won the game and that feels good."
Keys' 45-yard field goal accounted for the lone score of the third quarter, and brought Virginia Tech within 28-20 heading into the fourth.
Keys added another 45-yarder with 6:32 left in the fourth to make it a five- point game.
The Eagles then took over at their own 31 with 6 1/2 minutes left in regulation and embarked on an epic drive that saw the team run the clock down to 1:08 before turning the ball over on downs.
Game Notes
Boston College had 300 total yards of offense, 60 of which came in the second half...Virginia Tech had a season-low 240 total yards of offense. It was the fifth time in the last seven games they were held under 300...These two teams played twice last season. The Eagles took a 14-10 decision in Blacksburg, but the Hokies got the last laugh, winning the conference crown with a 30-16 decision in Jacksonville in the ACC Title Game.
