Sanchez was 15-of-20 passing for 253 yards while Ronald Johnson and Patrick Turner grabbed a pair of scores each. The Trojans racked up 362 yards on the ground with Broderick Green leading the way with 121 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries. C.J. Gable had three scores on 109 yards rushing, while Stafon Johnson gained 112 yards on just 11 carries.
The Trojans (5-1, 3-1 Pac-10) dominated the line of scrimmage, outgaining WSU 625-116. USC has now routed three straight opponents since dropping its conference opener at Oregon State on September 25th, dispatching of both Oregon and Arizona State prior to Saturday's one-sided affair.
Junior Kevin Lopina was charged with the task of leading an already inept offense against a Trojan defense giving up just 9.4 points per game coming in. Lopina led the Cougars to just one first down through the first two quarters and finished 6-of-9 for 28 yards with an interception.
Logwone Mitz dented the line for 52 yards rushing on 19 carries and Jeshua Anderson caught four balls totaling 29 yards for Washington State (1-7, 0-5), which was coming off lopsided conference losses to both UCLA and Oregon State.
"I think the effort is there, but the emotion leaves us," Cougar head coach Paul Wulff said. "It's not that they're quitting. Somewhere we have to have some players make some plays. This team has struggled making plays, and their emotion level drops. They need to grow up, have to mature, and learn how to fight a little bit more. They have to learn how to compete and not have the glazed look over their eyes."
Things started to unravel for the Cougars after the team lost redshirt freshman QB Marshall Lobbestael for the season with a knee injury suffered against Oregon State. Lobbestael had taken over under center for starter Gary Rogers, who suffered a cervical spine fracture against Portland State earlier this year.
The Trojans will take to the road again next week, taking on Arizona, while the Cougars will get a chance to lick their wounds with an open date.
The Trojans scored 21 and 20 points, respectively, in the first two quarters and outgained the Cougars 408-17 in net yards of offense to help engineer an early blowout.
Sanchez tossed a pair of TD passes to Turner on the Trojans' first two possessions from 23 and 14 yards. Johnson then snagged a three-yard score to make it a 21-0 game after one quarter.
Gable ripped off a 17-yard score to open the second quarter and Sanchez connected with Johnson for a second TD on the next series, this time from 16 yards. A 21-yard scoring strike from Sanchez to Anthony McCoy made it a 41-0 game at the half.
WSU doubled its output on offense in the third quarter, gaining an additional two first downs on 65 total yards, but the Cougars were no match for the Trojans, who made it a 48-0 game when Gable scored from three yards out.
Green opened the final frame with a one-yard score and found the end zone again from 18 yards to up the score to 62-0. Gable polished off the romp with a late four-yard score.
Game Notes
USC has won the last six meetings including a 47-14 drubbing last year at the Rose Bowl...The Trojans have dominated the series, boasting a 56-8-4 all- time advantage...WSU posted its last series win in 2002...Johnson finished with five catches for 94 yards while Turner caught three balls for 46 yards. WSU wound up with four first downs to USC's 28.
