Texas (7-0) fortified its position atop the rankings after receiving only 39 first-place votes in last week's poll. Alabama (7-0), remained second despite losing all 26 of its first-place votes after defeating Ole Miss, 24-20, in Tuscaloosa.
Penn State (8-0), Oklahoma (6-1), Florida (5-1) and USC (5-1) each held Nos. 3-6, respectively, after each posted a victory Saturday.
Oklahoma State (7-0) moved up a spot to seven after defeating Baylor, 34-6, and Texas Tech fell a spot to eight after posting a 43-25 victory at Texas A&M.
Georgia (6-1) rose one spot to nine behind a defeat of then-22nd ranked Vanderbilt, which fell from the rankings. Ohio State is the new 10th-ranked team after crushing Michigan State -- which also fell out of the rankings.
LSU (5-1), Utah (8-0) and Boise State (6-0) each moved up two spots to Nos. 11-13, respectively. The Tigers edged out South Carolina, 24-17, on the road, while the Utes continued to steamroll through the Mountain West, toppling Colorado State, 49-16. The Broncos kept up their domination at home, beating Hawaii, 27-7, Friday night.
South Florida (6-1) jumped five spots to 14, and TCU (7-1) made its second appearance in the polls this season at 15 after defeating then-unbeaten Brigham Young, 32-7, on Thursday.
Missouri (5-2) fell to 16 after its loss to Texas, and Pittsburgh (5-1) moved up six spots to 17 with a thorough beating of Navy, 42-21. BYU (6-1) had the biggest drop in the poll, falling nine spots to 18 after the loss to TCU, most likely ending its chances at a spot in the national title game.
Kansas (5-2) dropped three spots to 19 after losing to Oklahoma, and Ball State (7-0) continued to rise in the rankings, moving up four spots to 20 without playing a game.
Nos. 21-25 featured five newcomers to the poll, including some familiar faces. Georgia Tech (6-1) took the 21st spot after winning at Clemson, 21-17. Tulsa (7-0) is 22 after a 77-35 thrashing of UTEP.
Boston College (5-1), which finished last season at 10 thanks to quarterback Matt Ryan, is at 23 after defeating then-17th ranked Virginia Tech, 28-23. The Hokies fell out of the rankings. Florida State (5-1) won a 26-17 decision at North Carolina State and is 24, while Minnesota (6-1), arguably the biggest surprise of the season after finishing 2007 with a 1-11 record, rounded out the rankings at 25.
Saturday's action features a battle for first place in the Big Ten, as Penn State travels to Ohio State. The Big 12 features two high-profile matchups, as Texas will be tested for the third straight week, taking on also-unbeaten Oklahoma State. Texas Tech will also visit Kansas.
The SEC will feature the other premier matchup of the weekend, as Georgia visits Baton Rouge to take on LSU.
