Report: BC LB Toal done for season

Chestnut Hill, MA (Sports Network) - Boston College fifth-year senior linebacker Brian Toal broke his right leg in the Eagles' 28-23 victory over then-No. 17 Virginia Tach on Saturday and, according to a report in the Boston Herald, will be lost for the remainder of the season.

According to the article, BC head coach Jeff Jagodzinski announced Monday that Toal suffered a broken fibula in the first quarter of the win and will need surgery. The coach also said it's not likely that Toal would be ready if the school makes a bowl game.

The injury, which effectively will end his career as a Boston College Eagle, was sustained as Toal collided with defensive tackle B.J. Raji while tyring to corral Hokies quarterback Tyrod Taylor.

The broken leg is the latest in a slew of injuries that has hindered Toal's ability to live up to his much-hyped potential. Coming to the school as one of the most highly-touted recruits in program history, Toal earned Big East Rookie of the Year honors in his true freshman season of 2004. During his sophomore year, Toal suffered nerve damage in his neck in a game against NC State in November.

The neck injury sidelined him for the majority of 2005 and into the spring of 2006. To make matters worse, Toal then hurt his shoulder in the second game of his junior year. Although he was able to play through the shoulder setback, it clearly put a damper on his performance and he opted for surgery the following offseason. The rehab process overlapped with last season and Toal took a medical redshirt to prepare for the current season.

Boston College, which cracked the AP top-25 at No. 23 after solving Virginia Tech, will turn to senior Robert Francois in Toal's absence.
