Texas Tech, Penn State and Utah enter this week with the nation's longest winning streaks at nine games, dating back to last season. The Red Raiders are 7-0, their best start since 1976, but they are about to embark on a four-game stretch that is downright treacherous. After this weekend's clash with Kansas, Tech will take on Texas, Oklahoma State and Oklahoma in succession. Last weekend, the Red Raiders beat Texas A&M in College Station by a 43-25 final.
As for Kansas, it is coming off a 45-31 loss to Oklahoma in Norman. That setback halted a three-game winning streak for the Jayhawks, who are now 5-2 overall. Needing just one more victory to become bowl eligible, Mark Mangino's team hopes to accomplish that goal this weekend in front of the Homecoming crowd.
Texas Tech owns a commanding 9-1 series edge over Kansas, including a 30-17 victory over the Jayhawks in the most recent meeting in 2005.
Texas Tech is one of the nation's most explosive offensive teams, as the club is averaging 45.9 ppg and 557.0 total ypg. The Red Raiders have already scored 43 offensive touchdowns, staggering to say the least.
Quarterback Graham Harrell is a Heisman candidate who has completed 69.8 percent of his passes for 2,761 yards and 23 touchdowns against five interceptions. It certainly helps to have the nation's top wide receiver in the fold, as Michael Crabtree continues to dominate opposing defenses. The super sophomore has 51 catches for 724 yards and 12 touchdowns, and those numbers would be even better if not for a couple of nagging ankle injuries. Baron Batch leads the ground attack with 491 yards, while Shannon Woods has rushed for eight touchdowns.
Against Texas A&M last weekend, Tech racked up 33 first downs and 561 total yards, a typical day at the office. Harrell completed 44-of-56 passes for 450 yards and three touchdowns to overshadow a pair of interceptions. He also ran for two scores, and Crabtree had a pair of touchdown receptions.
"Kyle Field is the greatest place to play at, so to come out with a win is big," said Harrell after the contest.
Opponents are scoring 21.1 ppg against Texas Tech, which is surrendering 351.0 total ypg this season. The Red Raiders have been tough against the run, limiting foes to 92.4 ypg and 3.0 ypc. While they have given up a high amount of yardage through the air, it is important to keep in mind the they have been winning most games by wide margins, causing opponents to abandon the run and throw the ball on almost every down.
Brian Duncan leads Tech with 51 total tackles. Daniel Charbonnet has four interceptions to his credit, and McKinner Dixon has six sacks. The Red Raiders were brilliant against the run last weekend, holding the Aggies to 20 yards on 23 attempts. Marlon Williams was outstanding in the triumph for Tech, as he made 12 total tackles, twice as many as his closest teammate.
The Kansas offense is led by an undersized quarterback who continues to put up tremendous numbers. Todd Reesing has completed 69.6 percent of his passes for 2,322 yards and 17 touchdowns against only five interceptions. An athletic signal caller, Reesing has run for two scores and is more than capable of avoiding the rush. His top targets on the outside are Kerry Meier and Dezmon Briscoe, a pair of talented playmakers. Meier has made 57 catches for 632 yards and three scores, while Briscoe has hauled in 43 receptions for 705 yards and eight touchdowns.
Jake Sharp leads the ground attack with 386 yards and five touchdowns, but he left the last game and is listed as questionable for this weekend's tilt. Kansas is averaging 33.9 ppg and 460.9 total ypg, impressive numbers by any standards, and the team posted 31 points and 491 total yards against a tough Oklahoma club last weekend. Reesing completed 24-of-41 passes for 342 yards and two touchdowns, but he was intercepted twice. Briscoe racked up school records of 12 receptions and 269 receiving yards en route to two scores, while Sharp rushed for 103 yards and a score.
"Five hundred yards for any offense is always good," said Briscoe after the game. "We were pretty even between the pass and the run, but Oklahoma made more plays than we did."
Through seven outings, Kansas is yielding 21.9 ppg and 360.1 total ypg. The Jayhawks have been solid against the run, limiting foes to 109.7 ypg and 3.7 ypc. The pass defense has struggled a bit at times, however, surrendering 250.4 ypg with 10 touchdowns. James Holt leads Kansas with 53 total tackles, including seven TFLs. As for Jake Laptad, he has five sacks to his credit.
The Jayhawks were completely manhandled by Oklahoma last weekend, as they were victimized for 674 total yards and 36 first downs. The Sooners scored six offensive touchdowns in the clash and racked up 468 passing yards against a seemingly helpless secondary. Kansas finished the contest without a single takeaway or sack, and the players would be best served to put the performance out of mind.
"There were some plays where we were not in our coverage like we should have been," said safety Darrell Stuckey. "After coming in here and fighting against a good team, I think we will be able to come out next week and play a lot better."
