Tech is 16-2 on the road in ACC contests since joining the league in 2004. The Hokies carried a five-game winning streak into last weekend's clash with Boston College, but that road tilt resulted in a 28-23 setback. Although Tech needs just one more victory to become eligible for a bowl bid, the team has its sights set on an ACC title.
The same can be said for Florida State, which has won three straight decisions to move to 5-1 overall and 2-1 in conference action. The Seminoles were most recently in action on October 16th when they posted a 26-17 victory over North Carolina State. Three of the next four will take place at home for FSU, including this weekend's tilt.
Florida State owns a 21-11-1 series lead over Virginia Tech, but Hokies' coach Frank Beamer picked up his first win against FSU's Bobby Bowden last season.
Although Virginia Tech scored 23 points last weekend against Boston College, the team failed to score an offensive touchdown and finished with a lowly total of 240 yards. Tyrod Taylor was effective as a runner, posting 110 yards on 15 carries. Unfortunately, the quarterback did not get the job done with his arm, as he completed only 12-of-27 passes for 90 yards. Tech was just 5- of-17 on third down conversion attempts and 1-of-3 on fourth down tries.
"We just didn't execute the plays that were called," said Taylor after the contest. "We had a tough time running the ball or getting anything going in the air."
The Hokies are averaging a respectable 24.4 ppg this season despite gaining a lackluster 285.3 total ypg. They have scored 15 offensive touchdowns, 13 of which have been rushing scores. Taylor leads the team with 448 rushing yards, while Darren Evans is close behind with 442 yards and a team-high eight scores. As a passer, Taylor has completed 56.7 percent of his attempts for 585 yards with one score and three interceptions. No receiver has made a major impact for the Hokies, who have lost only one fumble all season.
As usual, the Virginia Tech defense was extremely active against Boston College last weekend. Less than two minutes into the first quarter, Brett Warren intercepted a BC pass and raced 36 yards for a touchdown. Then, in the second quarter, Victor Harris returned a pick 55 yards for a score. In all, the Hokies forced five giveaways and limited Boston College to 300 total yards.
"Its not just the offense," said Beamer, recognizing the room for improvement in all three aspects of the game. "Its all of us."
The run defense held the Eagles to 2.2 yards per rush, but BC still got into the end zone twice on the ground. Opponents are scoring 19.9 ppg against Virginia Tech, which is yielding 312.3 total ypg. With 19 takeaways and 15 sacks, the Hokies have made a large number of big plays. Harris has four interceptions to his credit, and Orion Martin has 9.5 TFLs.
Like in years past, Florida State has an explosive offense, and the team is averaging 37.3 ppg and 419.0 total ypg. The Seminoles have found great success running the football, as they are racking up 216.0 ypg and 5.5 ypc en route to 15 touchdowns. Antone Smith is tops among the tailbacks with 483 yards and 10 touchdowns. Christian Ponder, the team's starting quarterback, has completed 53.1 percent of his passes for 960 yards and eight scores. He is also a threat to run the football, adding another dimension to the offense. No receiver has stood out from the pack, but there is a great deal of collective talent in place.
Florida State posted 392 total yards against NC State last time out, and the Seminoles did not commit a single turnover. They kept possession for over 38 minutes, thanks in large part to a 10-of-17 effort on third down conversion attempts.
"We knew as long as we didn't hurt ourselves wee were going to do well," said a triumphant Ponder. "We were just taking the easy routes that they were giving us all day and thats what we did."
Coach Bowden is undoubtedly proud of the way that his defense has played so far this season, as the Seminoles are limiting opponents to 16.0 ppg and 248.0 total ypg. Stopping the run has been a major area of strength for Florida State, which is permitting only 79.5 ypg and 2.7 ypc. In six outings, opponents have scored just two rushing touchdowns against the squad. Derek Nicholson leads the defense with 35 total tackles, including nine TFLs. Everette Brown has seven TFLs to his credit.
The 'Noles failed to force a single turnover against NC State and permitted the Wolfpack to post 338 total yards. Florida State yielded 157 rushing yards on only 22 attempts, but the fact that the team only permitted 17 points overshadowed some of the blemishes.
"Its an ACC win and a win against a team that played well against us at their home place," said safety Myron Rolle. "We are trying to get better every week."
