Ball State trounces Eastern Michigan to remain unbeaten

Muncie, IN (Sports Network) - Nate Davis threw for 241 yards with two touchdowns and caught another pass for a score, as 20th-ranked Ball State blitzed Eastern Michigan, 38-16.

Davis completed 17-of-31 passes with an interception for Ball State (8-0, 4-0 MAC). MiQuale Lewis ran for 75 yards and a score, Briggs Orsbon caught five passes for 47 yards and a touchdown while also throwing for a score and Madaris Grant caught five passes for 92 yards.

Andy Schmitt served as Eastern Michigan's offense, throwing for 309 yards on 28-of-49 passing with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Tyler Jones was on the receiving end of plenty of those, catching 11 passes for 120 yards and a touchdown for Eastern Michigan (2-7, 1-4).

Ball State used a B.J. Hill 16-yard punt return to set up favorable field position on its first scoring drive of the game. Davis sprinted for 14 yards and found Grant for 25 yards on successive plays, eventually leading to Ian McGarvey's 27-yard field goal.

EMU lost possession on downs at the Ball State 34-yard line and moved the football to midfield on its next drive before punting.

Ball State reversed field position with Davis' 20-yard strike to Grant and a 22-yard connection with Louis Johnson. Later in the march, on 3rd-and-goal, a trick play resulted in Orsbon's four-yard touchdown toss to the quarterback Davis.

The Cardinals went to the locker room with the 10-point spread, but opened up the contest in the third quarter. Davis located Daniel Ifft running free for 34 yards and found one of his favorite targets Grant for 12 yards to the EMU 16-yard line. Davis continued his hot hand with an 11-yard toss to Torieal Gibson and a five-yard touchdown toss to Darius Hill.

"If you let teams hang around in a close game, you put yourselves in a position to be beat," Ball State head coach Brady Hoke said. "I thought we came out with a great mentality in the second half and we were able to put the game away."

After Schmitt was intercepted inside the Ball State 20-yard line, the Cardinals ventured on a back-breaking march. Cory Sykes was fed the football for 21 yards on three straight carries, and a defensive offsides penalty gave the Cardinals an automatic first down on 3rd-and-short moments later. Davis completed a 29-yard pass to Grant and another six-yard toss to the wideout, moving the football to the EMU six-yard line. From there, Davis threw a perfect six-yard strike to Orsbon.

The scoring, despite the large margin, came fast and furious after that. Eastern Michigan got on the scoreboard with Schmitt's seven-yard scoring strike to Jacory Stone, but Ball State quickly answered with 14:29 to play in the contest with Lewis' 52-yard sprint to paydirt.

Schmitt found Jones in the end zone for a five-yard touchdown and a 31-13 game after the missed two-point conversion with 9:08 on the clock.

Ball State sealed the contest when Trey Buice stepped in front of a pass and took the interception 45 yards for a score.

Joe Carithers' 37-yard boot for Eastern Michigan capped the scoring with 3:10 to play.

Game Notes
