Hall threw for 245 yards with four touchdowns for the Cougars (7-1, 3-1 Mountain West), who bounced back with a tough win after the October 16 loss at TCU ended the school's 16-game winning streak.
Austin Collie caught seven passes for 113 yards in the victory, as BYU ran its home winning streak to 17 games. Harvey Unga ran for 84 yards and a score on 19 carries for the Cougars, who rolled up 209 yards on the ground.
Omar Clayton completed 26-of-40 passes for 321 yards with a touchdown and an interception for UNLV (3-5, 0-4). Ryan Wolfe caught 10 passes for 136 yards with a score for the Rebels, who have lost four straight.
After Mitch Payne's second field goal of the game gave BYU a 34-28 lead with 8:36 to play, UNLV drove 60 yards for the go-ahead touchdown. Clayton threw a 15-yard scoring pass to Wolfe and the extra point gave the Rebels a 35-34 edge with 6:49 remaining.
BYU started its next series from its own 26 and quickly moved 74 yards on 11 plays to take the lead. Hall completed each of his seven passes during the series, including a six-yard strike to Pitta for the touchdown. Hall then found Unga with a two-point conversion pass to make it 42-35 with 1:46 left.
UNLV still had time and marched from its own 20 to the BYU 34 with less than a minute to play. On third down, Clayton hit Wolfe with a 20-yard pass to the BYU 14 and followed with a spike to stop the clock with 15 seconds left.
Clayton, though, was sacked by Matt Putnam on the next play and his last pass into the end zone was picked off by Andrew Rich to seal the contest.
It was the only turnover of the game for UNLV, which outgained BYU 463-454.
Collie returned the opening kickoff 75 yards to set up BYU's first score, an eight-yard pass from Hall to Andrew George for a quick 7-0 lead.
UNLV, though, answered with a 13-play, 62-yard drive to tie it. Clayton hit three passes to convert third downs to sustain the march and Frank Summers finished it with a six-yard touchdown run.
BYU followed with a 73-yard march to again move in front. Hall finished the 10-play series with a 20-yard scoring strike to O'Neill Chambers with 1:34 to play in the opening quarter.
The back-and-forth action continued, as UNLV responded with a 60-yard scoring set. Clayton completed two big passes, including a 29-yard toss to Casey Flair on 3rd-and-9. Coupled with a roughing the passer penalty that sent Clayton to the sideline, the Rebels had a first down at the BYU three and backup quarterback Mike Clausen scored on a one-yard run soon after to make it 14-14 early in the second period.
After a BYU punt pinned the Rebels at their own one-yard line, the Cougar defense stiffened for the first time and forced a three-and-out. The BYU special teams then partially blocked the punt and the Cougar offense took over at the UNLV five-yard line. Unga did the rest, carrying for three yards on the first play before scoring on the next attempt to give the Cougars a 21-14 edge with 7:18 left in the half.
Again, though, the Rebels had an answer. Clayton threw passes of 38 yards to Wolfe and 24 yards to Flair on consecutive plays during the next series to set up Summers' second touchdown run of the game -- this one from a yard away -- to tie it once more, and the teams went to the intermission locked at 21-21.
The Rebels had the ball to start the second half, but couldn't produce a score and the Cougars marched 79 yards with their first series of the third quarter to take the lead for the fourth time. Fui Vakapuna did most of the work during the march, as he ran three times for 49 yards and hauled in a one-yard TD pass from Hall for a 28-21 lead midway through the third quarter.
UNLV again followed with a touchdown on the very next series, as Clausen came on during the set and finished it with a two-yard touchdown run with 2:46 to play in the third.
BYU drove inside the UNLV 10-yard line on the next possession, but had to settle for a 26-yard field goal from Payne to regain the lead at 31-28 in the first minute of the fourth quarter.
The Rebels failed to answer this time and a fake punt on 4th-and-3 from their own 34 didn't work. The Cougars, though, managed only to tack on three points with the short field, as Payne drilled a 39-yard kick to make it a six-point game.
Game Notes
Collie notched his sixth straight 100-yard receiving game...Flair finished with eight catches for 92 yards...UNLV converted 11-of-15 third downs, while BYU was 7-for-11...Summers ran for 31 yards on 12 carries...BYU has won four straight meetings and leads the all-time series 13-3.
