McCoy leads top-ranked Longhorns to tight win over Oklahoma State

Austin, TX (Sports Network) - Colt McCoy threw for a career-high 391 yards and two touchdowns, as the top-ranked Texas Longhorns survived a strong push from seventh-ranked Oklahoma State and escaped with a 28-24 win.

McCoy completed 38-of-45 passes with one interception and also ran for a touchdown, as Texas (8-0, 4-0 Big 12) defeated its third straight ranked opponent. The Longhorns disposed of then-No. 1 Oklahoma two weeks ago and topped then-No. 11 Missouri last week. Texas travels to Lubbock next Saturday to face Texas Tech in another pivotal Big 12 showdown. Texas Tech beat Kansas, 63-21, on Saturday to remain unbeaten.

Texas wide receiver Jordan Shipley caught a single-game school record 15 passes for a career-high 168 yards and a score.

Kendall Hunter gashed the Texas defense, rushing for 161 yards and one touchdown on 18 carries for the Cowboys (7-1, 3-1), who have dropped 11 straight meetings to the Longhorns.

Zac Robinson completed 17-of-26 passes for 199 yards and one touchdown for Oklahoma State.

"It was a heck of a college football game," said Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy. "It was a great setting, great atmosphere. I was very proud of our team today. The guys played with a lot of heart. The guys made good decisions. We played very well as a team. Defensively, they ran on us as little bit, moved the ball quite a bit early. Then our defense rallied and played really hard, had some big hits and forced some turnovers in the second half. Offensively, we were able to stay balanced and were able to run the football and pass the football."

Trailing by 14 points, Robinson connected with Dez Bryant for a 20-yard pass, setting up a one-yard scoring plunge by Keith Toston which trimmed Texas' lead to 28-21 with 3:43 remaining in the third quarter.

On the second play of the next drive, McCoy was intercepted by Jacob Lacey, who was taken down at the OSU 42. The Cowboys capitalized on the turnover as Dan Bailey kicked a 39-yard field goal 2:02 into the fourth quarter.

McCoy then coughed the ball up at the OSU 10 with just over five minutes remaining in regulation, but the Texas defense held the Cowboys on fourth down.

The Longhorns got the ball back at the Cowboys 27 with 2:39 to go and advanced the ball to the one, where they opted to go for the end zone. However, McCoy's pass to Chris Ogbonnaya fell incomplete.

OSU took over with 33 seconds on the clock, needing to travel 99 yards for the go-ahead score. Robinson found Bryant for 23 yards and scrambled for 13 before completing a 14-yard pass to Bryant, which placed the ball at the Texas 49 with six seconds left. The Cowboys had one last chance, but Robinson's deep ball was knocked down.

"He's just absolutely amazing with his accuracy and toughness," Texas head coach Mack Brown said of McCoy. "He's running the ball well and he's leading this team well. He was really taking a deep shot on the one that was intercepted, and the fumble where the ball was jerked out of his hands was really close."

After the clubs exchanged punts to begin the contest, the Longhorns started their second drive of the game from their own seven-yard line. McCoy found Shipley on a fade pattern for a 14-yard touchdown, capping the 11-play drive with 1:47 to play in the first quarter. The TD pass was the 20th of the year for the Heisman hopeful.

OSU had something brewing on the its next possession, but Hunter was stripped of the ball and the Longhorns recovered at their own nine with just under a minute left in the opening frame.

Texas went the other way as McCoy directed a nine-play drive that ended with a 14-yard touchdown run by Vondrell McGee. Five times this season the Longhorns have orchestrated a scoring drive of 90-plus yards.

The Cowboys, though, answered with a nine-play series. An 11-yard pass from Robinson to Bryant moved the chains on third down and spotted the ball at the Texas 23. Hunter then atoned for his earlier miscue, bursting around the left side and scampering down the far sideline for the 23-yard score.

Quan Cosby then hauled in a 17-yard TD strike as he was falling down to give the Longhorns a 21-7 lead with 4:18 to go in the first half. Perrish Cox returned the ensuing kickoff 52 yards before he was knocked out of bounds at the Texas 29. Seven plays later, Robinson hooked up with Bo Bowling on a quick slant for a nine-yard touchdown and OSU went into halftime down 21-14.

OSU was forced to punt on the initial drive of the second half and Texas got the ball at its own 16-yard line. On 3rd-and-1 from the OSU 21, McCoy was picked off by Cox, but a roughing the passer penalty negated the turnover and McCoy eventually capped the 10-play drive with a quarterback draw from the three for a score and a 28-14 lead.
