Seminoles top Hokies; Virginia Tech QBs hurt

Tallahassee, FL (Sports Network) - Christian Ponder completed 11-of-19 passes for 159 yards and a touchdown as 24th-ranked Florida State downed Virginia Tech, 30-20, at Doak Campbell Stadium.

Antone Smith had nine carries for 57 yards and a score and Marcus Sims added a score on the ground for the Seminoles (6-1, 3-1 ACC), who have won their past four games.

"To be successful, you have to win the close games," said Florida State coach Bobby Bowden. "We haven't the last two or three years. This year we've won the close games. Now can we keep it up? I don't know but that's your key."

Darren Evans had 15 carries for 77 yards while Jarrett Boykin had four catches for 89 yards for the Hokies (5-3, 2-2), who have dropped their past two games after winning five straight.

Virginia Tech lost quarterbacks Tyrod Taylor and Sean Glennon to left ankle injuries during the game. On the first play from scrimmage, Taylor rolled out to his right and was tackled by Toddrick Verdell. The sophomore left the game and was replaced by Glennon.

Glennon completed 9-of-16 for 133 yards before suffering a left ankle injury in the third quarter. The senior was sacked by Dekoda Watson and had his leg caught in the turf.

"Sean Glennon was a left fibula; we suspected a fracture but the initial x- rays were negative," said Virginia Tech trainer Mike Goforth. "We will probably re-x-ray him back home, but he was able to put weight on it near the end of the game. I expect he will be back."

Cory Holt, a senior wide receiver, finished the game under center and went 3-for-6 with 28 yards and a score.

After exchanging punts to start the third, the Seminoles took the lead for good. On fourth down, the Hokies were called for roughing the punter and the Seminoles had a fresh set of downs. On the next play, Ponder and Greg Carr hooked up on a 48-yard play. Two plays later, Ponder and Taiwan Easterling connected on a four-yard touchdown for a 17-13 lead with 6:05 left in the third.

Florida State held Virginia Tech to a three-and-out on the next touch and then padded its lead. After starting the drive near midfield, the big play was a 39-yard reception by Carr. Sims capped the drive with a one-yard touchdown for a 24-13 advantage with 1:09 left in the third.

A 29-yard field goal from Graham Gano less than two minutes into the fourth gave the Seminoles a 27-13 lead.

The Hokies clawed back into the contest on their next touch. The team faced a 4th-and-1 at the Florida State seven-yard line and was able to advance the chains when Holt got three yards. On the next play, Holt found Andre Smith in the end zone to make it a 27-20 game with 8:26 to play.

The Seminoles, though, answered with a 46-yard field goal from Gano with 2:14 left to seal the victory.

Virginia Tech got on the board first thanks to its defense. The team held Florida State at its own three-yard line and a 42-yard punt was returned 16 yards to give the Hokies the ball at the Seminoles 29. However, the team was able to move the ball just six yards and a 41-yard field goal from Dustin Keys with 5:51 left in the first made it a 3-0 game.

After forcing the Seminoles to a three-and-out on the ensuing possession, the Hokies added to their lead. A seven-play, 64-yard drive was capped on a one- yard touchdown run by Glennon as time expired in the first quarter for a 10-0 lead.

Florida State finally got its offense on track after getting the ball back. A 27-yard kickoff return from Michael Garvin gave the team the ball near midfield and on a 3rd-and-2 play, Antone Smith took the ball into the end zone on a 39-yard run to make it a 10-7 game with 12:40 left in the second.

The Seminoles held Virginia Tech on the next series, and then tied the game on a 50-yard field goal from Gano with 9:33 left in the first half.

However, the Hokies got a 20-yard field goal from Keys with just three ticks left on the second quarter clock to take a 13-10 lead into the locker room.
