Daniel's big night leads Mizzou to rout of Buffs

Columbia, MO (Sports Network) - Chase Daniel threw for five touchdowns to tie a school record and had 302 yards through the air, as the 16th-ranked Missouri Tigers blanked the Colorado Buffaloes, 58-0, at Faurot Field.

Daniel completed 31-of-37 passes for Missouri (6-2, 2-2 Big 12), which was coming off consecutive losses to Oklahoma State and Texas. Jeremy Maclin had 11 receptions for 134 yards and two scores, while Chase Coffman and Tommy Saunders each had a touchdown catch.

"I think we have to prove something to ourselves that we can bounce back," Daniel said. "Get everything going and get everything right. We don't have practice tomorrow, so its good to celebrate. Its a good feeling to get back to winning."

With Coffman's six receptions, he set the record for most receptions in NCAA history by a tight end. Coffman now has 219, which is two more than Louisville's Ibn Green, who played from 1996-1999.

Derrick Washington ran for 83 yards on 17 carries, while finding the end zone once. The Tigers were able to convert on 8-of-13 third down attempts and were able to hold the Buffaloes on 12-of-16 of their third downs.

"I think my football team responded to the challenge of getting refocused and I'm very pleased with that," said Missouri head coach Gary Pinkel. "Its been a couple tough weeks. I have a bunch of great competitors, good kids. I thought overall it was a good win. All sides of the ball, the kicking game was sound. I'm pleased we got back in the winners circle. Its a fun business as long as you win football games."

Cody Hawkins struggled for Colorado (4-4, 1-3), throwing for just 86 yards on 9-of-17 passing before giving way to Tyler Hansen. Hansen didn't fare much better, hitting on 12-of-16 pass attempts for 72 yards. Scotty McKnight caught four passes for 44 yards, but the team ran for only 41 yards for the game and managed only 199 yards of total offense.

"We got blistered. It was a good, good team. We got outplayed and outcoached in a big way," said Colorado head coach Dan Hawkins. "You always do (feel prepared), but at the same time we're kind of fragile in a sense. Certainly when they got up big early that hurt our confidence."

The Tigers posted their first shutout of Colorado since 1962, when Missouri defeated the Buffaloes by a 57-0 margin.

Daniel led Missouri to an opening drive touchdown on only four plays. After completing three consecutive passes for 53 yards, Daniel handed it off to Washington for a three-yard score just 1:09 into the game.

After a botched punt attempt by Colorado, the Tigers took over on the Buffs' five. On 3rd-and-goal from the one, Daniel threw to the back of the end zone for Coffman, who made a leaping one-handed catch for the touchdown.

"We were working on that play for five or six weeks now," Daniel said. "We finally got the call. It looked good in practice and a guy like (Coffman) just makes things work. It was a little Tim Tebow action. I try to be like him as much as I can."

Another three-and-out gave Missouri the ball back, and Daniel led the team on a 13-play march that ended with a three-yard scoring pass to Maclin with 3:20 left in the first.

On the Tigers' second drive of the second quarter, Daniel methodically drove the team downfield, converting on all four third downs. Saunders caught a 10- yard touchdown pass to complete the 15-play set with 8:10 to play in the half.

Jeff Wolfert put Mizzou up 34-0 at halftime with two field goals -- including a 44-yarder as time expired.

The Tigers kept rolling up the score in the second half. Daniel found Dana Alexander for a four-yard touchdown with six minutes to go in the third and hit Maclin for a 30-yard score five minutes later, increasing the lead to 48-0.

Wolfert hit a 46-yard field goal with 10:10 to play, and De'Vion Moore ran for a 55-yard touchdown to account for the final margin.
