South Florida falls again to Cincinnati

Cincinnati, OH (Sports Network) - Tony Pike threw two touchdown passes and John Goebel had 121 total yards of offense and a score as the Cincinnati Bearcats toppled the 24th-ranked South Florida Bulls, 24-10, at Nippert Stadium.

Pike, who broke his non-throwing arm in a game against Akron on Sept. 27, connected on 20-of-28 pass attempts for 281 yards and was intercepted once. Goebel scored on the ground where he gained 78 yards on 17 carries and also caught three balls for 43 yards.

Mardy Gilyard had four grabs for 98 yards and a score for the Bearcats (6-2, 2-1 Big East), who were coming off a crushing defeat, having been walloped by Connecticut, 40-16, on Saturday.

The win was Cincinnati's third straight over South Florida and helped elevate the school to a perfect 4-0 home mark this season. The Bearcats defense forced four turnovers and came up with two sacks in the win.

"I'm really proud of the way our football team bounced back from the UConn game on a very short time table," Cincinnati head coach Brian Kelly said. "We ran the ball when we had to. In order to win football games, you have to run the ball to get downs. By in large, we wanted to defend the Nip, and our kids did that."

Matt Grothe struggled under center, completing just 13-of-31 passes for 174 yards with three interceptions for the Bulls (6-3, 1-3), who were dealt a crushing defeat of a different kind this past Saturday when Louisville posted a 24-20 victory to dampen the school's BCS hopes. With consecutive conference losses, South Florida is now all but eliminated from the BCS picture and dropped to a game above the winless Syracuse Orange in the Big East conference standings.

Carlton Mitchell had four catches for 77 yards while Moise Plancher scored the lone touchdown on the ground as part of a 47-yard, eight-carry effort. Ben Williams led the rushing attack with 79 yards on 17 carries.

The Bulls were just 4-of-14 on third down conversions.

"You can't turn the ball over. We turned the ball over a number of times and against a good football team -- against anybody it's hard to win a ball game doing that," USF head coach Jim Leavitt said. "I thought Matt (Grothe) just tried too hard on some of those plays. We gave up to many long pass plays. They made great catches, we didn't. We dropped too many balls."

Grothe's first pick led to a Bearcat score when Mike Mickens came away with the ball on a 3rd-and-12 play from the Cincinnati 40. Mickens took the pigskin 58 yards the other way, setting up the Bearcats on the USF 14. Three plays later Goebel was in the end zone finishing off a two-yard jaunt.

The Bulls answered, though, on their next turn, using two big plays to move 82 yards in just 1:37. Grothe hit Mitchell for 47 yards to the Cincinnati 33 and Plancher ripped off a 32-yard run on the next play before scoring from one yard out to tie the game at 7-7.

A 32-yard field goal from the Bearcats' Jake Rogers with 3:42 to play in the first made it a 10-7 game.

Cincinnati made its first touch of the second quarter count with a 12-play, 91-yard trek that Pike finished off with a 26-yard TD strike to Gilyard to make it a 17-7 affair.

The next three drives resulted in turnovers, two for the Bearcats, and Grothe's second pick, but neither team could capitalize and the score remained 17-7 at the half.

Maikon Bonani drilled a 47-yard field goal a little over 5 1/2 minutes into the second half to draw USF within a score, but Grothe was intercepted for the third time on the next series and the Bearcats scored 29 seconds into the final stanza to take a two-touchdown lead.

Pike hooked up with Dominick Goodman on a 24-yard pass on the final play of the third quarter and hit Goodman again for 12 yards from the Bulls' 13-yard- line. Pike's one-yard toss to Connor Barwin made the score 24-10

Needing points, USF moved the ball 75 yards in 13 plays on its next turn, but turned it over on downs after a 1st-and-goal from the Bearcat seven-yard-line produced two yards.

The Bulls suffered a similar fate on their final possession as Grothe threw incomplete on third and fourth downs from the Cincinnati eight with less than five minutes to play, and the Bearcats ran out the clock from there.

"When we had the ball down inside the ten and not convert two times, there's no excuse for that. We have got to be able to score points there," Leavitt expounded.

Game Notes

The Bulls' normally potent ground game racked up 182 yards one week after managing just eight yards in the loss to Louisville...Cincinnati had 115 yards rushing for the game...Goodman finished with five receptions for 57 yards...Grothe also ran for 54 yards on eight attempts, 38 of those yards came on a fourth-quarter run that moved the Bulls into Bearcat territory...Despite the loss, USF won the time of possession, 30:32 to 29:28.
