With that in mind, there are a couple of key games this weekend that will go a long way in determining which teams will be playing for a national title and which ones will find themselves in a lesser bowl game, thinking about what could have been.
There should be little debate that the Big 12 and SEC are the top conferences in college football, and the two power leagues may very well be represented in the BCS Title Game come January 8th.
In the Lone Star State this week, all talk revolves around the big game between top-ranked Texas and sixth-ranked Texas Tech. In years past, the Red Raiders would enter November with an unblemished record, only to be exposed as a one-trick pony by more balanced programs which found a way to solve Tech's offensive complexities.
This season is a little different for Mike Leach's team, as a great mix of veterans and youngsters has been a formula for success that included last weekend's 63-21 pasting of a good Kansas program.
The key is still an offense that makes it difficult for opposing teams to defend. The Red Raiders boast a Heisman hopeful QB in Graham Harrell and the nation's most dangerous wideout in Michael Crabtree. Harrell is following in a long line of ultra-productive signal-callers in Lubbock, and has already passed for 3,147 yards and 28 TDs in just eight games. Crabtree is as good as it gets downfield and is having his second straight monster campaign, as the 6-3 sophomore has grabbed 60 balls for 794 yards and 14 TDs. With six players with 20 or more receptions on the year, it is clear that Harrell does not just fixate on Crabtree, but will take what defenses give him.
Throw in an underrated ground game (138.5 ypg), and Texas Tech certainly has the ability to move up and down the field with a balanced attack.
Of course, the schedule up until this point hasn't exactly been daunting, but time will tell, with Texas this week, followed by Oklahoma State and Oklahoma closing out a grueling four-game swing.
However, don't put the cart before the horse, as the top-ranked Longhorns have no desire to move from their perch atop the polls. With Heisman front-runner Colt McCoy leading the way, they may not have to. Texas is getting it done with offensive proficiency and timely defensive stops and is closing out its own treacherous four-game slate, having already knocked off Oklahoma, Missouri and Oklahoma State.
This game will come down to the quarterbacks, and both should excel this weekend in a game that could be a barn-burner.
Heading east to Jacksonville, the SEC will be on full display. An Eastern Division rivalry that ranks among the best in college football is the highlight, with the fifth-ranked Florida Gators and the eighth-ranked Georgia Bulldogs getting it on.
The Gators are starting to hit their stride, and with a full complement of weapons now supporting their Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback, this is a team that can certainly win the SEC and perhaps the national title.
Tim Tebow's numbers this season look nothing like the ones that won him the Heisman last year, but Tebow is no longer a one-man show. The ground game is getting it done without the Gator gunslinger having to tuck the ball down and run with it, and the vertical game is as dangerous as ever with All-American candidate Percy Harvin on the outside.
The Florida defense and special teams are also playing lights-out, and provide plenty of big plays each week.
That leaves Georgia, which is peaking at the right time as well. The Bulldogs, led by savvy signal-caller Matthew Stafford (1,946 passing yards, 12 TDs) and All-American tailback Knowshon Moreno (6.2 yards per carry and 12 TDs), are coming off a 52-38 pasting of LSU and have built a great deal of momentum since their loss to Alabama in late September.
This could be another shootout, with the winner poised to represent the Eastern Division in the SEC Title game against the Crimson Tide, unless Alabama suffers a monumental collapse.
So, the college football world will split its attention between Lubbock and Jacksonville this Saturday, and the national title picture could become a lot clearer when Saturday comes to a close.
