Taylor went 17-for-22 with 327 yards and Josh Oglesby had two fourth-quarter touchdowns for the Hokies (4-1, 2-0 ACC), who have won four straight games. Ryan Williams had 24 carries for 83 yards in the win.
"I thought we played hard," said Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer. "I think Duke has a good program. You look at those defensive guys, up front they have some size, their linebackers are good. Offensively their quarterback is putting the ball on the money most of the day. I think Duke is a good football team. I don't think that's the old Duke football team. I think that's the new Duke football team."
Thaddeus Lewis went 22-for-40 with 359 yards and two scores and Will Snyderwine connected on all four of his field goal attempts for the Blue Devils (2-4, 0-1), who have dropped their past two games. Brandon King and Austin Kelly each caught a score.
"The bottom line, if we play better, we win the game," said Duke coach David Cutcliffe. "We did a lot of things that we had to do going in to win the game. We were tit for tat with them on both lines of scrimmage for most of the game. I thought our defense got beat down a little bit there late. Most of their rushing yards came in the last two possessions. We were equal in the battle of the line of scrimmage, which had me greatly concerned. We made some plays on offense and came close to making some plays on defense."
Trailing by seven points, Duke started the third quarter with the ball and a seven-play drive was finished on a 25-yard field goal from Snyderwine to make it a 17-13 game.
Virginia Tech responded with a nine-play drive that covered 44 yards and was finished on a 33-yard field goal from Matt Waldron for a 20-13 lead with 8 1/2 minutes left in the third.
The score remained that way at the end of the third quarter, but Duke ended the frame with the ball and made it a four-point game on Snyderwine's 47-yard boot between the uprights a little over a minute into the fourth.
However, the Hokies got their offense going on the ensuing drive and gave themselves some breathing space. After Taylor started the drive with a short pass to Dyrell Roberts, Williams ran the ball six straight times and gained 41 yards. Oglesby completed the drive with a 12-yard run up the middle and into the end zone for a 27-16 lead with 9:37 to play.
Duke came back and cut into the deficit on its next drive as Snyderwine kicked a 43-yard field goal with 7:08 to play.
However, Oglesby's second touchdown of the game, a 19-yard scamper with 2:28 to play gave Virginia Tech a 34-19 advantage.
Duke fought back and got into the end zone as Lewis hit Kelly on a four-yard score to make it a 34-26 game, but it was with 25 seconds left and Virginia Tech recovered the onsides kick and killed the rest of the clock.
On their second possession of the game, the Blue Devils took the lead. Facing a 2nd-and-6 just past midfield Lewis hit King for a 48-yard touchdown and a 7-0 lead with just under three minute to play in the first.
However, the Hokies answered just two minutes later on a 36-yard touchdown catch by Danny Coales from Taylor to tie the game.
After stopping Duke on its ensuing touch, Virginia Tech went on a 39-yard drive that ended on a 40-yard field goal from Waldron for a 10-7 lead with 10:41 left in the first half.
The Blue Devils were again held to a three-and-out and the Hokies padded their advantage as Taylor connected with Jarrett Boykin on a 28-yard score and a 17-7 lead with 6:14 left in the second.
However, Duke was able to cut into its deficit on the next drive as the team got a 29-yard field goal from Snyderwine with just seven seconds left in the half to make it a 17-10 game going into the break.
