No change at top of poll; Auburn and South Carolina enter
New York, NY (Sports Network) - Florida, Texas, Alabama and LSU remained the top four teams in the latest Associated Press college football poll, while Auburn and South Carolina became the latest SEC teams to join the rankings.The powerful Southeastern Conference holds three of the top four spots and now has six teams ranked. Auburn moved into the poll at No. 17 and South Carolina is 25th. Ole Miss at No. 20 is the sixth and one team fell out of the rankings this week, as Georgia dropped a last-minute decision to LSU on Saturday.
Florida (4-0) was idle this past weekend and lost one of its first-place votes in the process. The Gators received 54 top tallies and a total of 1,486 points from a nationwide media panel.
With Heisman quarterback Tim Tebow's status still unclear because of a concussion, the defending national champs will visit LSU in the biggest matchup this coming Saturday.
Texas (4-0) was also idle this past Saturday. The Longhorns, one of six Big 12 teams ranked this week, again earned one first-place vote and a total of 1,416 points. Alabama (5-0), coming off a 38-20 win over Kentucky, added a first- place vote for five.
Virginia Tech and Boise State swapped places this week. The Hokies, after a struggle against Duke, moved into the fifth spot, while the Broncos dropped one slot after a lackluster win over UC Davis.
Southern California, after a 30-3 rout of California, held at No. 7, while Cincinnati jumped two spots to eighth after a 37-13 victory over Miami-Ohio. Ohio State is ninth with TCU rounding out the top 10.
Oklahoma fell out of the top 10 after a 21-20 loss at Miami-Florida. The Sooners were eighth and dropped 11 spots to 19th.
Miami-Florida moved up six spots to 11th and is followed by Iowa, Oregon, Penn State, Oklahoma State, Kansas, Auburn, BYU, Oklahoma and Ole Miss.
The last five teams ranked this week are Nebraska, Georgia Tech, South Florida, Missouri and South Carolina.
Auburn is 5-0 after a 26-22 win at Tennessee this weekend and is ranked for the first time in 2009. South Florida is also new to the poll with a 5-0 mark, while Missouri was ranked for one week before a narrow victory over Bowling Green knocked out the Tigers. South Carolina is also ranked for the first time this year.
In addition to Georgia's fall, Houston, Michigan and California also dropped out this week.
Houston was 12th, but suffered a 58-41 loss at UTEP. Michigan was ranked 22nd, but a 26-20 overtime loss at Michigan State knocked out the Wolverines. Cal has fallen out of the rankings after being sixth two weeks ago. A 42-3 setback at Oregon dropped the Bears to 24th and the fall was complete this weekend with the home pounding at the hands of USC.
In addition to the Florida/LSU blockbuster, there are just two other games this coming week with top-25 teams facing each other. In another SEC tilt, Alabama visits Ole Miss, while a Thursday night Big 12 battle pits Nebraska at Missouri.
