Cowboys come calling on Aggies in Big 12 opener for both teams

College Station, TX (Sports Network) - The 15th-ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys are sure to face a challenge as they battle a Big 12 rival, the Texas A&M Aggies, in hostile College Station on Saturday afternoon. Texas A&M owns a commanding 17-7 advantage in the all-time series with Oklahoma State, but the Cowboys crushed the Aggies last season in a 56-28 final.

This game mark's the conference opener for Oklahoma State, which is 5-8 in league lidlifters since joining the Big 12. The Cowboys are 3-1 overall this season, and they have won two in a row since suffering their lone defeat against a strong Houston squad. Oklahoma State has been idle since cruising to a 56-6 victory over Grambling State on September 26th. The Cowboys have the talent to compete for the Big 12 title, but the competition is stiff this year as usual.

"We are ready for this bye week," said defensive coordinator Bill Young after the Grambling game. "We have a lot of players that are banged up. We are anxious to get into the league and start playing to find out where we are as a football team."

Texas A&M is also ready to dive into a full slate of Big 12 games after four consecutive non-conference affairs to open the season. The Aggies beat their first three opponents, including a pair of blowouts over New Mexico and UAB. Unfortunately, the offense stalled last weekend in a lopsided 47-19 loss to Arkansas.

Two of the best offensive players for Oklahoma State are listed as questionable for this weekend's game. Star wideout Dez Bryant is dealing with a hamstring injury, and tailback Kendall Hunter has an ankle issue. Bryant has only played in three of the first four games this season, but he has four touchdowns and averages 19.0 yards per catch. Hunter has only carried the ball 32 times in the two games that he has played, and there is no question that both players are needed to contend for the Big 12 title. Quarterback Zac Robinson has rushed for three touchdowns, but he does most of his damage with his arm. Robinson has completed 62.9 percent of his passes for 791 yards and six touchdowns with only two interceptions, and the Cowboys are averaging 39.0 ppg and 419.8 total ypg.

Opponents are scoring 21.2 ppg against Oklahoma State, which is allowing 351.5 total ypg. The Cowboys have been solid against the run, permitting just 3.4 ypc. Against the pass, they have registered the same number of interceptions (four) as touchdowns allowed. The fact that OSU has come up with nine takeaways in four games is impressive, but the team's total of seven sacks isn't going to scare Texas A&M or any other club. Donald Booker has done a little bit of everything for Oklahoma State. In addition to his team-leading total of 26 tackles, he has forced a fumble, recovered a fumble and tallied a pair of TFLs.

Against Grambling State, the Cowboys churned out 587 total yards and scored eight offensive touchdowns. The ground attack was dominant, accounting for 321 yards on 43 attempts and five scores. Jeremy Smith rushed for 160 yards and a touchdown on 15 attempts, and Keith Toston had three touchdowns and 84 yards on just seven carries. Robinson completed 13-of-16 passes for 189 yards and one touchdown with one interception, and he had a rushing score as well. Defensively, the Cowboys permitted 260 yards to the Tigers and held them without an offensive touchdown. Sure, the overall effort of the squad was tremendous, but the level of competition is a far cry from Big 12 caliber.

"That's a good win for us tonight," said head coach Mike Gundy. "We were able to use some players that don't have a lot of experience that stepped up and made some plays."

Last weekend, Texas A&M finished with 28 first downs compared to just 16 for Arkansas and also earned an edge in total yardage. So how did the Aggies lose the game by 28 points? Well, A&M only came away with points on two of its five trips to the red zone. One of those trips resulted in a fumble that was returned 85 yards for a score. Jerrod Johnson threw for 345 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions, but the versatile signal caller was unable to contribute as a runner. Defensively, the Aggies did a poor job against the pass, allowing four touchdowns and 271 yards on 17 completions.

"We didn't make the most of big plays when we could have," said Johnson after the game. "We are just going to have to go back next week and get ready for Oklahoma State."

Texas A&M is averaging 38.5 ppg this season to go along with 545.2 total ypg, and Johnson's numbers are simply sensational. The signal caller has completed 62.1 percent of his passes for 1,306 yards and 11 touchdowns with zero interceptions. Ryan Tannehil and Uzoma Nwachukwu both have three receiving scores to their credit, but Johnson prefers to spread the ball around rather than rely on one or two go-to receivers. Cyrus Gray leads a balanced rushing attack with 265 yards, and Johnson has four touchdowns.

Opponents are racking up 25.5 ppg against Texas A&M, which is yielding 372.2 total ypg. Clearly, the game against Arkansas had a negative affect on the points allowed stat, which was much more favorable after three games. The Aggies are giving up 4.4 yards per rushing attempt and 11.3 yards per pass completion, so there is room for improvement against both means of attack. The fact that A&M has already tallied 16 sacks suggests that generating pressure has been a major area of strength. Foes are making good on only 29 percent of their third down conversion attempts, a credit to the defense. Von Miller has been one of the nation's truly elite defenders thus far, as he has already posted nine sacks.
