The Horned Frogs currently own a six-game win streak, tied for the fourth- longest in the nation, stretching back to last season and have lost just once in the last 12 outings, that being a 13-10 setback to a Utah team that was the only undefeated squad in 2008.
Finally kicking off their MWC schedule this weekend, the Frogs head into action after defeating local rival SMU by a score of 39-14 last week, retaining the Iron Skillet in the process.
As for the Falcons, a team that is 3-2 on the season, they are atop the league standings only because they've defeated both New Mexico and San Diego State already, two MWC opponents who have a combined 2-8 record thus far. Last weekend, Air Force had a its two-game win streak snapped in a 16-13 overtime loss to Navy as part of the chase for the annual Commander-In-Chief's Trophy.
Last season, TCU crushed the academy in a 44-10 final, earning the Frogs their fifth win in eight opportunities (5-2-1) in the series. Two years ago these teams opened MWC play against each other and in that meeting the Falcons secured a 20-17 win. The lone tie in the series came in a scoreless 1959 Cotton Bowl.
TCU's offense, particularly at the running back position, has been rather wide open so far this season with a number of different players taking the lead, and for now that sits just fine with head coach Gary Patterson.
"We feel like we have four or five guys who are very capable. If we run Joseph Turner 20-to-30 times a game, he probably won't stay healthy. To be able to have him carry 10-to-15 times and work in Matthew Tucker as the other big back, along with Ed Wesley, Ryan Christian, Jercell Fort and Chris Smith is a good mix."
Against SMU that sort of philosophy and scheme certainly gave the Frogs a distinct advantage as they ended up running the ball 53 times for 229 yards and three touchdowns. Turner was the high man with 79 yards and a score on 19 carries, followed by Wesley who had 63 yards on 10 attempts. Throw quarterback Andy Dalton into the mix and opposing defenses find it difficult to counter much of what the Frogs try to accomplish.
While the offense was motoring right along for the Horned Frogs last weekend, the defense was closing in on SMU ball carriers and keeping them under wraps. Only one player for the Ponies finished with positive yardage on the ground as the team was held to minus-16 yards net on 18 attempts. B.L. Mitchell managed to exploit the TCU pass defense for 240 yards and two touchdowns, yet the squad was also able to log two interceptions and five sacks along the way as well.
"You would always like for it to be better," coach Patterson says of his suffocating defense. "I think our younger players are learning to be better students - watch more film and do the things they need to do on the road. They have to study and know what's coming. It makes it a lot easier."
Whatever it is that those younger players are doing it is certainly paying off right now because the TCU run defense is currently ranked first in the nation with just 47.0 ypg allowed. Giving up 192.8 ypg by way of the pass, mostly because opponents are playing from behind and already know that keeping the ball on the ground is a lost cause, TCU is fourth in the conference in that category. Put it altogether and the Frogs are 16th in scoring defense, allowing just 14.8 ppg after four games this season. It doesn't hurt that the program is sixth nationally with 3.75 sacks per game either.
Even though he might not be able to climb into first place on the TCU passing list, Dalton has shown that he can catch defenses napping by having thrown for 5,515 yards already in his career. Just this season he has completed 68.1 percent of his attempts for more than 203 ypg and six touchdowns, against just two interceptions.
Including Dalton the Horned Frogs have four players who have carried the ball at least 32 times thus far and each has gained no less than 150 yards on the ground. In Turner the team has a back who is averaging almost six yards per carry and already has five touchdown runs. But by keeping other backs in the stable ready to run, when Turner is taking a breather the offense is not.
As was the case against San Diego State a week earlier, the offense for the Falcons had considerable trouble getting started versus Navy on Saturday. If not for a pair of field goals by Erik Soderberg, the second of which was a 39- yard effort that split the uprights at the end of regulation, the Falcons never would have even been in a position to try and take out Navy in overtime.
Bouncing back after his ankle injury, Tim Jefferson converted 6-of-14 passes for 57 yards and was intercepted once, while Savier Stephens generated 80 rushing yards on 17 tries.
Defensively, the star of the game for the Falcons was again Anthony Wright who, for the second week in a row picked off a pass and returned it for a touchdown, this time a 67-yard effort with under six minutes to play in the second quarter.
Wright now has three interceptions on the season, not to mention one forced fumble and one recovery for an Air Force defense that is first in the nation in turnover margin with a plus-2.6 per outing. Even though it might not be tested all that much this weekend, the Falcons can also brag about having the top pass defense in the conference, one that ranks fifth nationally with just 140.4 ypg allowed.
Really, what the Falcons have to be most concerned about is how well they will be able to use their strength, their rushing attack, to go after the Horned Frogs. Again, TCU is first in the country in stopping such attacks, while the academy is now second in the nation with an average of 291.8 ypg. If the game demands that Jefferson get more involved with putting the ball in the air, the Falcons could be in for a rude awakening since they are second-to-last in the country with a mere 81.6 ypg passing.
"As complete a football team as there may be in the sport," is how Air Force head coach Troy Calhoun recognizes the Horned Frogs right now. "This is a squad that is deservedly in the Top-10."
