The nation will get a much better read on the SEC this Saturday, especially since the Gators and Tigers hook up in Baton Rouge and the Crimson Tide do battle with Ole Miss in Oxford.
Can Florida continue its unbeaten season against an LSU squad fresh off a gigantic road score at Georgia?
The main story line in this contest is the health of Tim Tebow. Even though the star quarterback has practiced throughout the week, he still hasn't been cleared to play after sustaining a concussion at Kentucky.
Florida opened as the nine-point favorite, but the line has since dropped down to 7.5 after Tebow and backup quarterback John Brantley split the reps with the first-team offense on Thursday.
The Gators, 4-0 straight up, are just 2-1 against the spread this season with the one loss coming three weeks ago vs. Tennessee. It was their first ATS defeat since September 27, 2008.
LSU is 5-0 SU but only 2-3 ATS. On a positive note, the Tigers have already matched last year's regular season ATS win total in just five games. However, they have not been very effective in recent seasons going 7-24-3 ATS in their last 34 SEC matchups with an amazing 0-11 ATS mark in their last 11 conference home games!
The Gators are 5-2 ATS the last seven meetings when favored over the Tigers. Nevertheless, in the last seven overall matchups, the favorite is just 2-5 ATS and the higher ranked squad is 1-6 ATS. This year's contest will be the first since 2001 in which the road team will be giving points.
Florida won last year's game 51-21 but LSU trailed by only six early in the third quarter. The Gators poured it on the rest of the way outscoring the Tigers 31-7 for the 30-point SU victory.
The key angle in this year's matchup will be how well LSU's defense can stop Florida's ground game after allowing 265 rushing yards the prior meeting. The Tigers held Georgia to 45 yards on 24 rushes last week so their confidence level should be sky high come Saturday night. Still, the Gators have the slight edge in terms of preparation since they were off last week.
For those wagering on Florida, be aware that even if Tebow does indeed start, one huge hit from an LSU defender can knock him right out of the game. If that happens, look for the Gators to attack more through the air than on the ground since Brantley is a better pure passer than Tebow. Florida could still win without its number one quarterback but remember: LSU is 23-1 SU in its last 24 games under the lights at Tiger Stadium.
AFTER FIVE WEEKS
I went 8-12 last week for a four-week total of 46-43, good for 52%. The two Five-Star plays both lost so the season total now stands at 2-4. The Three-Star selections are 17-19 after a dismal 3-6 week.
Four of the five Two-Star plays proved victorious so that record improves to 17-10 while the One-Star picks went 1-3 to even that record at 10-10.
As a reminder, the Five-Star plays are when my Power Plays and Key Plays coincide. The Three-Star selections comprise the rest of my Power Plays: games where there's at least a five-point differential between my line and the actual line. The Two-Star picks are the remaining Key Plays and the One-Star plays are the secondary selections.
THREE-STAR PLAYS
There are zero Five-Star selections for week six. However, three Three-Star plays are on tap this Saturday: West Virginia (at Syracuse), Florida International (at Western Kentucky) and Western Michigan (at Toledo).
TWO-STAR SELECTIONS
Wisconsin takes on Ohio State for the seventh time since 01 with the two teams having split the previous six meetings. Ohio State is ranked ninth in the current AP Poll with a 4-1 mark while Wisconsin stands outside the Top 25 despite five consecutive victories to start the season.
The Buckeyes have been stout on defense allowing just 14 points in their two Big Ten games but Indiana and Illinois (the two opponents) rank 9th and 11th in the conference in scoring, respectively. The Badgers will present a much tougher assignment as they currently lead the league with 35 points per game while rushing for 217 yards per game.
Everyone knew how potent Wisconsin's ground attack was going to be this season even without P.J. Hill, but the big story has been the development of Scott Tolzien. The junior quarterback has already thrown for over 1,000 yards and nine touchdowns.
Wisconsin has the firepower to not only hang with the Buckeyes but to beat them.
Take the Badgers plus the points.
Northwestern could regain the services of running back Stephen Simmons for its contest against Miami-Ohio, which would be a significant addition considering the problems the Wildcats have endured at that position since the junior tailback went down with a leg injury in the Eastern Michigan game. Pat Fitzgerald's squad has had other problems this season, namely with an offensive line that has allowed 12 sacks the first five games after giving up only two in the first five last year.
Miami-Ohio scored zero points in its first 10 quarters while allowing 125. The RedHawks, though, have been surprisingly competitive of late trailing their opponents by just a 66-52 count since late in the third quarter of the Western Michigan contest. They also gave Cincinnati a run for its money last week behind new quarterback Zac Dysert, who completed 33-of-47 for 286 yards vs. the Bearcats.
Northwestern returns home after its victory at Purdue, a game in which the Boilermakers had a chance to win in the closing seconds despite a -5 mark in the turnover department. With a trip to Michigan State coming up the following week, there's no doubt the Wildcats will be in for a huge letdown against the lowly RedHawks.
Take Miami-Ohio plus the points.
North Carolina State is coming off a six-point road loss at Wake Forest, a game that saw Russell Wilson throw his first interception in 379 attempts. The Wolfpack are 3-2 on the year, but they're still only 1-2 against FBS competition.
The Duke Blue Devils are coming off an impressive performance vs. Virginia Tech, but one has to wonder how much of their solid play came from the Hokies being a bit flat after the monster home win over Miami-Florida. Still, totaling almost 400 yards (397) against Virginia Tech is nothing to sneeze at. Moreover, the Blue Devil's defense held Ryan Williams to just 83 rushing yards on 24 carries.
In last year's matchup with NC State, David Cutcliffe's squad outgained the Wolfpack 411-377, but lost by 10 points at home. The reason? The Blue Devils scored just three points on four separate trips inside the Pack's 15-yard line.
NC State has a big game next week at Boston College where Tom O'Brien coached for 10 years. Not surprisingly, the Wolfpack have lost and failed to cover the game prior to taking on the Eagles the two years O'Brien has been in Raleigh.
Take Duke plus the points.
ONE-STAR PLAYS
Go with Arkansas (vs. Auburn), Ball State (at Temple), Eastern Michigan (at Central Michigan), UCLA (vs. Oregon), Texas A&M (vs. Oklahoma State) and South Carolina (vs. Kentucky).
