South Carolina holds off Kentucky for fourth straight win

Columbia, SC (Sports Network) - Stephen Garcia threw three touchdown passes and scored once on the ground, as 25th-ranked South Carolina held on for a 28-26 victory over Kentucky at Williams-Brice Stadium.

The Gamecocks (5-1, 2-1 SEC) needed to stop a two-point conversion attempt in the fourth quarter to preserve their fourth straight win. South Carolina's lone loss this season came in a 41-37 shootout at Georgia on September 12.

Garcia completed 16-of-23 passes for 233 yards with an interception. His three TD tosses went to Alshon Jeffery, who finished with seven catches overall for 138 yards as South Carolina won its 10th straight over Kentucky.

"We made plays but I don't think we played as well as we can," said Garcia. "Twenty-eight points is decent, but I feel we can score a lot more than that and move the ball better. We're just getting better every single week and working hard in practice. It will pay off for us."

Kentucky (2-3, 0-3) has lost three straight games, all to ranked conference opponents, but the Wildcats have been closer in each outing. After a 41-7 loss to top-ranked Florida on September 26, Kentucky dropped a 38-20 decision to No. 3 Alabama last week prior to this week's two-point setback.

Derrick Locke ran for 89 yards and a touchdown on 24 carries in defeat, while adding four receptions for 20 yards. Randall Cobb also ran for 89 yards and a score on 13 carries and hauled in a touchdown pass for the Wildcats, who lost quarterback Mike Hartline to a sprained knee in the second half.

Hartline completed 9-of-14 passes for 139 yards with a touchdown before leaving. Will Fidler took over, although the Wildcats ran numerous plays with a direct snap to the running backs, and connected on just 2-of-8 throws for 16 yards.

"We fought really, really hard. Look at Randall Cobb. I have never seen anyone play with that much heart in my life. It is just too bad, and a tough loss," said Fidler.

Garcia scored on a one-yard run with 8:22 remaining in the fourth quarter to give South Carolina a 28-20 lead.

The Wildcats answered with a 70-yard drive for a touchdown. Cobb did most of the work while taking direct snaps in Hartline's absence. He started the series with runs of 11 and 20 yards, then added a 25-yard carry to set up a first down at the South Carolina six.

Cobb scored from the two just three plays later with 4:34 left. Surprisingly, Cobb was absent for the two-point play and Fidler's pass was knocked down at the line of scrimmage to keep the Wildcats down by two.

South Carolina then converted a pair of third downs to run out the clock. Garcia ran for five on 3rd-and-4 and Kenny Miles added a 14-yard run on 3rd- and-6 with less than 2 1/2 minutes remaining to seal the contest.

Kentucky grabbed a 3-0 lead on its first possession of the game when Lones Seiber drilled a 36-yard field goal, but a 61-yard kickoff return by Chris Culliver set the Gamecocks up at the Kentucky 34. Garcia needed four plays to put his team in the end zone, ending the set with a 10-yard TD pass to Jeffery to give South Carolina a 7-3 edge with 3:55 to play in the opening period.

The Wildcats went back in front in the first minute of the second quarter when Locke scored on an 11-yard run, but a 49-yard kickoff return by Culliver gave South Carolina another short field. Garcia needed only three plays to guide the Gamecocks 39 yards for another score, hitting Jeffery with a 28-yard pass in the end zone for a 14-10 advantage.

Kentucky answered with an 82-yard drive to reclaim the lead. A 55-yard pass from Hartline to Cobb keyed the eight-play series and the two hooked up for a seven-yard touchdown to put the Wildcats ahead 17-14 with 9:06 left in the half.

Sam Maxwell picked off Garcia at the Kentucky 25 to thwart South Carolina's next series and the Gamecocks got the ball back after a punt. They moved to the Kentucky 40 before a sack on third down forced a punt just 22 seconds before the intermission.

Hartline was hurt on the first series of the third quarter and did not return.

The Gamecocks went ahead for good with just under 6 1/2 minutes left in the third when Garcia found Jeffery with a 22-yard scoring strike.

Kentucky followed with a drive to the South Carolina 14, and on 4th-and-6 tried a fake field goal. Cobb was the holder and tried to run for the first down, but was stopped three yards short.

Garcia fumbled on South Carolina's next series and the Wildcats took over at the Gamecocks' 15, but Kentucky had to settle for a 35-yard field goal from Seiber with 1:24 left in the third to make it a one-point game.
