No. 2 Texas rides strong second half to down Colorado

Austin, TX (Sports Network) - Jordan Shipley was a one-man show for No. 2 Texas, recording a 74-yard punt return for a touchdown while adding 11 catches for 147 yards and another score in a deceptively close 38-14 victory over Big 12 foe Colorado.

The Longhorns (5-0, 2-0 Big 12), seemingly looking forward to next weekend's Red River Rivalry with No. 19 Oklahoma, trailed at the half before pulling away as a result of two special teams scores and Earl Thomas' interception return for a touchdown in the second half.

"I'm really excited about the win," Texas head coach Mack Brown said. "You've got to give Colorado credit. It was a tough, hard fought, physical game; one that we really needed going into next week."

Colt McCoy had another subpar showing, throwing an interception and losing a fumble while finishing with 265 yards and a touchdown on 32-of-39 attempts.

Texas' defense, however, had its way with Colorado (1-4, 0-1), holding the Buffaloes to 127 total yards. Cody Hawkins threw two touchdowns and two interceptions, ending with 68 yards on 6-of-18 throws before being pulled in the fourth quarter in the team's second straight loss.

Rodney Stewart led an anemic running attack with 40 yards on 21 carries.

While its offense was sluggish throughout, Texas' special teams and defense turned the game around in the third.

On the fourth punt of the half, Marquise Goodwin broke through the line of scrimmage and blocked Matthew DiLallo's boot from the Colorado 25-yard line. Ben Wells recovered the loose ball and took it in from the three to put the hosts on top, 17-14.

McCoy was picked off deep in his own territory the next time Texas touched the ball. The visitors had 3rd-and-5 from the 12, and Hawkins tried to find Scotty McKnight on an out route to the right sideline. However, Thomas stepped in front of the pass, picked it off and went 92 yards the other way for the game- changing score with 4:55 left in the third.

Tyler Hansen relieved Hawkins early in the fourth quarter and also failed to move the chains on his first drive. Shipley then fielded a punt near the right hash mark, made one tackler miss and shifted down the left sideline 75 yards to paydirt.

Foswhitt Whittaker's 12-yard TD run with roughly six minutes left provided the final margin in an otherwise lackluster effort from the Longhorns offense.

Colorado got the ball first and wasted little time marching 66 yards for the opening score, as Patrick Devenny ran a corner route to the front left pylon and hung on for a 25-yard TD despite taking a big hit 3 1/2 minutes in.

Cody Johnson's first-down run on 4th-and-1 and Shipley's 23-yard reception on Texas' first touch preceded a 33-yard field goal off the foot of Hunter Lawrence to get the hosts on the board.

The Longhorns moved inside Colorado's 10-yard line the next time they had the ball, but a short gain, sack and incompletion brought on the kicking unit, and Lawrence had his 29-yard attempt blocked.

Late in the half, Marcus Burton sacked and stripped McCoy of the ball deep in Texas territory. The Buffaloes recovered the fumble and Hawkins found a wide open Riar Geer after a play action fake for the easy 11-yard score on the first play after the turnover.

The score came with 2:51 left before intermission, and Texas had enough time to go 78 yards in eight plays to make it 14-10 at the break after McCoy found Shipley on a perfectly executed post-corner route from 39 yards out.

"I thought the defense played great. We obviously didn't do well on the punt team, and offensively, we gave a pick for a touchdown. So, you've got to put three phases together. When you play a great team like this, your margin of error is going to be pretty small," Colorado head coach Dan Hawkins said.

Game Notes

Texas has won five in a row against Colorado and leads the all-time series, 11-7...The Longhorns, who have won all of their games this season by double digits, have won 13 straight home games...Texas leading rusher Vondrell McGee had 14 yards on seven carries and left the game in the second half with an apparent shoulder injury...Johnson led Texas' running back with 20 yards on nine carries...Colorado hosts Kansas next Saturday..Hansen went 3-for-5 through the air with 17 yards in a quarter of play.
