Stanzi completed 20-of-38 passes and was intercepted once for Iowa (6-0, 2-0 Big Ten), which has won the first six games of a season for the first time in Kirk Ferentz's 11 years as head coach of the team.
"We're excited about our record, but there's still a lot of football left," Stanzi said. "We still have a lot of things that we need to work on but that's also exciting. We'll take a look at tape tomorrow and just keep pressing forward."
Tony Moeaki had six catches for 105 yards and two scores, as the Hawkeyes took advantage of five turnovers while committing only one in the win. Adam Robinson led the team in rushing with 72 yards on 10 carries.
Iowa posted its first win over the Wolverines since 2003, having lost the last three meetings.
Brandon Minor provided Michigan (4-2, 1-2) with 95 rushing yards and two scores on 22 carries, but the Wolverines dropped their second straight contest after losing in overtime to Michigan State last week.
Tate Forcier completed only 8-of-19 passes for 94 yards and an interception, and he was replaced late by Denard Robinson, who threw for 30 yards on 3-of-4 passing but also had a costly interception in the game's final moments. Robinson added a rushing score in defeat.
"The turnovers really hurt us," said Michigan head coach Rich Rodriguez. "Some of those third-and-longs were really frustrating. It probably frustrates the defensive coaches as much as me. It's frustrating because you have a chance to maybe pin them back and get good field position."
Down by two early in the fourth, Michigan took the ball at their own two after stopping Iowa on 4th-and-goal, but the Wolverines couldn't move the ball.
A punt set up the Hawkeyes at Michigan's 42, and Stanzi hit Moeaki on a short pass on the first play. Moeaki did the rest from there, splitting the defense as he ran for the touchdown and a 30-21 lead with 13 minutes remaining.
The Wolverines mounted a comeback, scoring a touchdown with 3:16 to play. Michigan went 59 yards in 11 plays, capped by Robinson's three-yard touchdown run up the middle to again cut the deficit to two points. Robinson replaced Forcier at quarterback on the drive.
On an ensuing onside kick, the ball sailed out of bounds, giving Iowa the ball on the Wolverines' 45, as Michigan had just one timeout remaining.
The Hawkeyes went three-and-out, giving the ball back to the visitors on the 17-yard line with 1:30 to go in the game.
With Robinson once again at quarterback, Martavious Odoms caught a 14-yard pass on the first play, and Robinson then gained seven yards on the ground. On the next play, though, Michigan had two open receivers downfield, but Robinson overthrew them, and Brett Greenwood intercepted the pass to seal the win for Iowa.
"(Robinson) just made a mistake," Rodriguez said. "He was just trying to make a play. He actually missed part of the signal and things were hurrying a little bit. He competed, but we'll learn from it."
Iowa got the ball first, but Michigan's defense came up with the first points on Donovan Warren's 40-yard interception return for a touchdown on the second offensive play of the game.
Stanzi responded to help the Hawkeyes tie the game on a 57-yard drive that lasted just under five minutes. He converted all three third downs on the series and found Tony Moeaki on a 34-yard scoring play on 3rd-and-12.
Forcier was intercepted on Michigan's first offensive series, leading to a Daniel Murray 28-yard field goal for Iowa's first lead with six minutes remaining in the first quarter.
The Wolverines answered to go in front on a 72-yard march. Facing a 4th-and-4 on Iowa's 35 and choosing not to attempt a field goal, Michigan gained a first down on Forcier's nine-yard rushing play. He hit Odoms for a 21-yard pass play to the Hawkeyes' three, and Minor ran it into the end zone on the next play for a 14-10 lead.
Murray drilled a 41-yard field goal early in the second quarter to pull Iowa to within a point, and the Hawkeyes' defense forced a punt to regain possession.
On a seemingly impossible 3rd-and-24 situation from the Iowa 45, Stanzi somehow found Derrell Johnson-Koulianos for 47 yards down to the eight-yard line, and Brandon Weghner scored from one yard away on 3rd-and-goal for a 20-14 margin heading into halftime.
After missing a 53-yard field goal just before the midway point, Murray was good from 40 yards away on Iowa's opening drive of the second half to give the home team a nine-point lead.
Michigan kept staying in the game, though, as Minor's one-yard touchdown run with 4 1/2 minutes left in the third capped a 10-play drive that got the Wolverines to within two.
Late in the third, Michigan was in line to get the ball back, but a muffed punt gave Iowa prime position on the Wolverines' 16-yard line. A 10-yard pass play set up 1st-and-goal, but a pass to Moeaki from the two on fourth down was incomplete, and the ball went back to the visitors in the opening moments of the fourth.
Game Notes
