That's what happened in Columbus, Ohio on Saturday, as Ohio State pulled off the 31-13 victory over Wisconsin despite scoring only one offensive touchdown.
Terrelle Pryor completed just 5-of-13 passes for 87 yards and Brandon Saine led the rushing attack with 55 yards. Take away a 31-yard scamper by Saine and a 27-yard rush by Pryor, and the Buckeyes gained only 39 yards on the ground.
For those who wagered on Wisconsin, it was a disheartening loss considering the Badgers were getting two touchdowns.
Besides controlling the contest in almost every offensive category, the Badgers endured a pair of missed field goals from kicker Philip Welch, one a 33-yarder that would have brought the deficit down to 12 (and under the number) late in the third quarter.
Wisconsin had other opportunities to cover the spread but failed time and time again.
In the final stanza, the Badgers had the ball first-and-goal at Ohio State's eight-yard line and couldn't come close to the end zone after a pair of sacks and an incomplete pass.
They had one final chance with the ball just inside Ohio State territory with approximately 90 seconds remaining. However, the Buckeyes' defense came up huge once again with its third sack in five defensive plays and the Badgers were finished.
So how did Ohio State win this game?
It all came down to defense and special teams.
The Buckeyes not only intercepted Scott Tolzien twice, they returned both for touchdowns, including a Jermale Hines pick-six on Wisconsin's first drive in the third quarter.
The Badgers, who trailed by only 11 points at that time with almost an entire second half left to play, came right back to put up a three-spot on a 46-yard Philip Welch field goal which cut the lead to eight. However, Ray Small returned the ensuing kickoff 96 yards for a score and Wisconsin never came within the number again.
WHAT'S NEXT FOR BOTH TEAMS?
Wisconsin came into the game unbeaten at 5-0 but on the outside looking in as far as the rankings were concerned. Bret Bielema's club is still one win away from joining the Top 25 and they'll get that opportunity this coming Saturday when number 11 Iowa comes to Madison. Still, it will be a difficult task for the Badgers to move forward after such a devastating loss.
Not only have the Hawkeyes been the most impressive team in the Big Ten the entire season, they have won two of the last three games played at Camp Randall Stadium. Moreover, they are 5-1 ATS in their last six road games while the Badgers are just 2-5 ATS in their last seven at home.
The Buckeyes, who moved to 3-0 in league play and 5-1 overall, still have Penn State and Iowa left on the schedule but those two games are a few weeks away. They'll be on the road this Saturday against a Purdue team that has lost its last five games, four of which came by a touchdown or less.
The Boilermaker players have to be shaking their heads after another crushing loss, this one to Minnesota. They outgained the Golden Gophers 402 yards to 281, compiled 23 first downs to 14, converted over 50% of their third-down conversions while holding Minnesota to 33% on third-downs and still lost by 15 points. Sounds extremely familiar, doesn't it?
Minnesota took full advantage of multiple Boilermaker mistakes, hitting paydirt three times in a seven-minute span in the third quarter. The first touchdown came two plays after a seven-yard punt, the second one was set up by a fumbled kickoff return and the third score came on a blocked field goal attempt.
Purdue dropped its prior game vs. Northwestern committing six turnovers, but Danny Hope's squad played tough against the likes of Notre Dame and Oregon losing by a combined five points in those two contests.
The Boilermakers are much better than their record indicates, but keep in mind they have yet to face a defense as good as Ohio State's.
A PAIR OF CLOSE CALLS
There were other heartbreaking ATS finishes last week, including a game played in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
Wake Forest, a 13-point favorite over Maryland, led the Terrapins by 25 points at halftime, scoring touchdowns on five straight possessions. However, Maryland picked up two fourth-quarter TDs with the second one coming inside the final two minutes. The Demon Deacons wound up with a 42-32 victory and a failed cover.
The craziest ending by far came from Seattle, WA where Arizona, favored by four, led Washington by 12 points with just over three minutes to play. The Huskies then closed the gap to five on a 25-yard touchdown strike from Jake Locker to Kavario Middleton.
With 2:49 left on the clock, the Wildcats decided to throw the ball on their first play from scrimmage after the kickoff return. The pass hit wide receiver Delashaun Dean on the foot and bounced right into the hands of Mason Foster, who returned it for the game-winning touchdown and the outright win. Sometimes, it pays to be lucky.
WEEK SIX OBSERVATIONS
UNLV is a team in disarray. The Rebels have been outscored 87-21 over the last five quarters and head coach Mike Sanford is number one on the list of coaches on the hot seat.
Idaho is for real. The Vandals won their first conference road game since September 30, 2006 with their 29-25 come-from-behind victory over San Jose State. They have won four in a row for the first time this decade and have covered all six games in '09.
Staying in the Western Athletic Conference, the Nevada Wolf Pack showed what they can do when they hold onto the football. Chris Ault's squad destroyed Louisiana Tech, 37-14, on Friday night, and has now gained 1,284 yards in its last two games.
The 'Pack will be on the road this week for the first time since losing to Colorado State on September 19, and don't forget, they are just 3-9 ATS in their last 12 road games. In addition, Utah State will be an angry opponent after losing at New Mexico State on Saturday. The Aggies, who'll be playing their first FBS home game of the season, have covered the last two meetings with Nevada at Romney Stadium.
Northwestern defeated winless Miami-Ohio, 16-6, with Mike Kafka completing less than 50% of his passes and leading the team in rushing with just 53 yards. The Wildcats are now 0-3 ATS at home this season and appear up against it at Michigan State next week.
However, they actually are in a great spot this considering they are 4-0 ATS in their last four games as a road underdog. Northwestern is also a perfect 4-0 ATS in East Lansing this decade with three outright victories.
Back in 2000, the Wildcats won 37-17 as double-digit underdogs. In '02 they lost by 15 but were getting 25. Three years later the 'Cats prevailed 49-14 as 12.5-point underdogs, and two years ago they won by a touchdown getting 17.
THE NEW JEFF FRANK TOP 10
Just in case anyone is confused over these rankings, the Top 10 list is not a reflection of a given team's win-loss record. It's a guide in predicting spreads for the upcoming week.
1) Florida, 110; 2) Texas, 105; 3) Oklahoma, 104; 4) Alabama, 103; 5) USC, 101.5; 6-T) Boise State and Nebraska, 99.5; 8) Ohio State, 99; 9) Virginia Tech, 98.5; 10) Oregon, 97
