Johnson was injured September 28th when a bar reportedly carrying 275 pounds slipped from his hand and crushed his throat. He underwent what head coach Pete Carroll called "a very intricate surgery."
Doctors spoke Wednesday of Johnson's quick recovery from major reconstructive throat surgery. The Los Angeles Times had earlier reported that Johnson had his larynx realigned and that doctors were hopeful he would speak again.
"He has made extremely remarkable progress at this preliminary stage. We're happy with his progress and we're very optimistic for his long-term prognosis," stated Doctor Ryan F. Osborne, one of the surgeons who operated on Johnson.
Osborne added that Johnson will continue to rest at home and will be managed on an outpatient basis where he will undergo rehabilitation related to swallowing, breathing and speech.
When asked at his weekly press conference Tuesday about the current status with Johnson's voice, Carroll said, "He's not able to do anything yet with that. This is something that they're waiting for. I don't have any idea what the timeline is on that. It's something they're not allowing him to even test in any way."
Johnson's uncle Kregg Anderson read a statement typed by Johnson in preparation for Wednesday's press conference.
"This has been the most humbling and eye-opening experience in my 21 years of existence. This is not the end of anything, but the beginning of things to come. I will be back soon."
In four games this season, Johnson rushed for 157 yards and five touchdowns on 32 carries.
The sixth-ranked Trojans (4-1) play at No. 25 Notre Dame (4-1) on Saturday. USC has won the last seven meetings with the Fighting Irish.
