Dalton, TCU rout Colorado State

Fort Worth, TX (Sports Network) - Andy Dalton completed 15-of-23 passes for 211 yards and two touchdowns, as 12th-ranked TCU scored 44 unanswered points to destroy Colorado State, 44-6, in a battle between Mountain West Conference foes at Amon G. Carter Stadium.

Curtis Clay caught three passes for 70 yards and a TD for the Horned Frogs (6-0, 2-0 MWC), who have won eight in a row dating back to last season. Ed Wesley hauled in three passes for 52 yards and a score. Joseph Turner had a rushing TD for TCU, which was coming off a 20-17 victory over Air Force.

"We feel we've been playing pretty well. We still haven't played our best game. Hopefully, we will be able to look at some of the things we did tonight, fix our mistakes and go from there," Dalton said.

Grant Stucker connected on 7-of-15 passes for 59 yards for the Rams (3-4, 0-3), who have dropped four straight games after starting the year with three consecutive wins. Jon Eastman completed 3-of-5 passes for 53 yards. Leonard Mason rushed for 42 yards on seven carries. Dion Morton caught two passes for 25 yards for Colorado State, which was held to 182 total yards.

"We just didn't perform well here today. Gary (Patterson) does a good job coaching, and they have good players. We certainly did not play well enough to win the game," Colorado State head coach Steve Fairchild said.

A pair of Ben DeLine field goals gave CSU a 6-0 edge after one period of play. The Rams used their ground game effectively on their first drive of the game. Mason had six carries, including a 17-yard run, during a 10-play, 53-yard march that DeLine capped with a 31-yarder.

The Colorado State defense then came up big, forcing Wesley to fumble. Elijah- Blu Smith picked up the ball for CSU and returned it 29 yards to the TCU 29. The Rams couldn't do anything on offense and were forced to settle for a 47-yard DeLine field goal.

It was all TCU from there. Ross Evans cut the deficit to 6-3 with a 36-yard field goal early in the second. The Frogs marched into TCU territory on their next possession, setting up a 4th-and-1 at the 30-yard-line. Dalton took the handoff and was stuffed by the CSU defense.

Near the end of the half, a pass interference call set up TCU at the Colorado State two-yard-line. Turner capitalized with a two-yard rushing TD to give TCU a 10-6 lead with 3:08 left until half.

Jeremy Kerley electrified the crowd with a dazzling 69-yard punt return at the end of the half. Kerley raced down the right sideline and made multiple tacklers miss before finding the end zone for a 17-6 halftime lead.

The Frogs kept the momentum in their favor with a touchdown on their first possession of the third. On the eighth play of an 80-yard drive, Dalton found a wide open Clay in the middle of the field for a 47-yard score and a 24-6 lead.

TCU kept the big plays coming as Wesley hauled in a 39-yard TD reception for a 31-6 lead with five minutes left in the third. Antoine Hicks added a three-yard rushing TD with 2:25 left to make it 38-6 heading into the fourth.

Luke Shivers' four-yard TD run and the ensuing missed extra point early in the fourth accounted for the final margin.

"We always seem to start slow. I wish we would start a little faster but, in the end, it turned out all right with 44 unanswered points," TCU head coach Gary Patterson said.

Game Notes

The Frogs had 499 yards of total offense...TCU had 26 first downs in the game, while CSU had just 10...TCU won 13-7 against CSU last season and leads the all-time series, 6-1...The Frogs travel to BYU next Saturday, while the Rams host San Diego State.
