Texas edges Oklahoma in latest edition of Red River Rivalry
Dallas, TX (Sports Network) - Hunter Lawrence kicked the go-ahead 32-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter and third-ranked Texas beat No. 20 Oklahoma, 16-13, on a day Sooners quarterback Sam Bradford exited early with the recurrence of a shoulder injury.It was a see-saw battle in the annual Red River Rivalry, but in the end Colt McCoy helped the Longhorns (6-0, 3-0 Big 12) remain unbeaten.
Meanwhile, the Sooners (3-3, 1-1) were left wondering about the future of their reigning Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback.
Bradford was sacked by Aaron Williams, who came on corner blitz with nearly 11 1/2 minutes left in the first quarter. Bradford fell hard on the right shoulder, and got up gingerly before walking off the field. He was taken out of the game in favor of Landry Jones with the Sooners holding a 3-0 lead.
Bradford was knocked out of the first game of the season with a sprained shoulder joint and missed 3 1/2 contests in all. However, he looked fine in his return last week, throwing for 389 yards and one TD, without an interception in a 33-7 rout of Baylor.
After the game was over, there was no update on the status of Bradford, if he suffered a collegiate-ending injury or if he'll need surgery.
"It's extremely frustrating for me, to miss three games and start this one and then hurt my shoulder and not be able to finish," said Bradford. "It's hard to put into words the frustration I feel right now."
At the end of the game, good friends McCoy and Bradford met on the field, capping the finish to a sloppy game that featured eight turnovers and nearly 230 yards of penalties. Also, Texas' defense limited the Sooners to minus-16 yards on the ground.
"That's unfortunate," McCoy said of Bradford. "I got to visit with him after the game and told him I was praying for him and hope he can get well."
McCoy completed 21-of-39 passes for 127 yards with a touchdown and an interception for the Longhorns, who play at Missouri next Saturday.
"This is where we start, not where we finish," said Texas coach Mack Brown. "We were sitting here in this same position last year when we lost to (Texas) Tech we let it go back into a system. The (BCS) system kicked us out. Now next week's game becomes bigger than this one and it will progress like this for the rest of this year."
It was a rough day for McCoy, who hurt the thumb on his throwing hand and was just getting over a cold.
"They ran a blitz, and as I tried to hit the tight end, I hit [Oklahoma DT Gerald] McCoy in the helmet. My fingernail is about gone," said McCoy. "I just had to continue to play. That is the thing about this game that is so special. It is not going to be pretty every time. You do not know what is going to happen."
Bradford was 2-of-6 for 77 yards before leaving, while Jones finished 24-of-43 for 250 yards with a TD and two interceptions. DeMarco Murray caught eight passes for 116 yards in defeat.
Lawrence kicked a 42-yard field goal less than three minutes into the third quarter to tie the game 6-6.
McCoy's 14-yard TD pass to Marquise Goodwin with nearly seven minutes left in the third moved the Longhorns ahead, but on the ensuing series Jones connected with Ryan Broyles for a 35-yard score as he slipped through a tackle and rumbled down the sideline for the TD.
Lawrence's go-ahead kick came with 12:08 remaining and Texas stopped Chris Brown on fourth down run near midfield to get the ball back.
Williams picked off Jones later in the fourth giving the Longhorns the ball at the OU 20, but McCoy threw an interception just three plays later.
Jones failed to drive the Sooners into field goal territory as Earl Thomas came up with an interception with 3 1/2 minutes to go. Texas ran out the remaining time.
The 104th edition of the Red River Rivalry featured plenty of twists and turns, especially in the first half.
The Sooners received the ball after the game's opening kickoff and Bradford hit Murray with a 64-yard pass to the Texas nine. The drive stalled and Jimmy Stevens kicked a 26-yard field goal that clanked off the left upright and in.
McCoy was then sacked and fumbled the ball away, but Bradford was hurt on the ensuing possession.
Jones later led the Sooners on a march to a Stevens 37-yard field goal with 6:50 left in the first.
Stevens had a chance to make it 9-0, but he missed a 45-yard kick.
A poor exchange on a handoff led to a Sooners turnover in the first minute of the second quarter, but McCoy was sacked on a crucial third down and Texas punted.
The Longhorns capitalized on a muffed punt from Dominique Franks in a crazy sequence and later got within 6-3 on Lawrence's 42-yard field goal. Franks couldn't cleanly field the kick, but his left foot appeared to touch out of bounds, which may have given the Sooners the ball. Malcolm Williams recovered for Texas and then ran to the end zone, but fumbled before reaching over the goal line. After the play was reviewed, Texas was given the ball at the spot of Franks' fumble because a muffed kick, by rule, cannot be advanced.
Mossis Madu fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Texas recovered, but McCoy gave the ball right back while trying to score. McCoy ran up the middle and surged inside the 10, but had the ball stripped away and Franks recovered in the end zone. The play call stood after another video review.
Trying to drive for a last-second field goal to end the half, McCoy was sacked.
Game Notes
Oklahoma is at Kansas next weekend..Foswhitt Whittaker carried 18 times for 71 yards for the Longhorns...Texas has won four of the last five meetings and leads the all-time series 59-40-5...This was OU's second neutral field game in the Metroplex this season. The Sooners played their opener vs. BYU at the New Cowboys Stadium in Arlington...Broyles, who suffered a shoulder injury during a 21-20 loss to the Miami Hurricanes on October 3, had two catches for 33 yards...Texas has held the last four opponents to a combined 29 rushing yards...The attendance of 96,009 marked a Cotton Bowl and OU-Texas series record.
