Hansen went 14-for-25 with 175 yards and a pick while Rodney Stewart had 24 carries for 108 yards and two scores for the Buffaloes (2-4, 1-1 Big 12), who had dropped their previous two games. Riar Geer had four catches for 65 yards and a score for Colorado, which hadn't beaten Kansas since 2005.
"We have a lot of games left, we just have to keep on getting better. It gives us a little bit of juice that way and a little bit of confidence," said Colorado head coach Dan Hawkins. "We did a solid job, but we can still play better."
Todd Reesing went 30-for-51 with 401 yards, two touchdowns and an interception for the Jayhawks (5-1, 1-1), who had won seven straight going back to last season coming into the game. Dezmon Briscoe had eight catches for 154 yards and a score while Kerry Meier added 11 catches for 103 yards and a touchdown in the loss.
Trailing by four points early in the fourth quarter, Kansas began a drive with the ball at its own 42 and took the lead as Reesing and Briscoe connected on a 25-yard touchdown for a 30-27 lead.
Colorado, though, came charging back and a 10-play drive that covered 76 yards was capped on a Stewart 13-yard carry into the end zone for a 34-30 lead with 8:36 to play.
Kansas had consecutive first downs to start its next possession, but then faced a 3rd-and-29 after a 14-yard sack of Reesing and a five-yard delay of game penalty. Reesing avoided the rush and found a leaping Briscoe for a 41- yard play. The visitors converted another first down for 1st-and-goal at the three, but a pass interference call on Kansas moved the ball back 15 yards and Reesing's fourth down pass to Briscoe fell incomplete.
Colorado killed off three minutes, but had to punt, which gave the Jayhawks the ball at their own 25 with 58 seconds to play. Reesing was sacked on the first play then threw an incompletion, but moved the chains with a 14-yard pass to Briscoe.
After Meier caught a ball for nine yards, Briscoe made a 26-yard catch to get the ball to the Colorado 19. After two consecutive incompletions there was three seconds left. Reesing heaved the ball up and into the end zone for Briscoe, but he was sealed off as time expired.
"It was a great game. Give Colorado credit, they made some big plays at the end of the game. We've got our best receivers going up for the ball in the end zone and down the field," Kansas head coach Mark Mangino said. "We dug a hole for ourselves. We can't blame anybody but ourselves. Credit to Colorado, their kids played well."
Kansas got a 37-yard field goal from Jacob Branstetter with 6:01 to play in the first to grab a 3-0 lead. The score was setup on a 28-yard catch by Bradley McDougald.
Colorado answered with a field goal of its own on its ensuing possession as Aric Goodman booted a 45-yarder on the first play of the second quarter to tie the game.
On the second play of Kansas' next touch, Reesing fumbled the ball as he was sacked and Colorado recovered at the four. Stewart punched it into the end zone on the ensuing play for a 10-3 lead.
After holding Kansas on the next possession, Colorado added to its lead as Hansen and Green hooked up on a 12-yard touchdown catch to cap an eight-play drive for a 17-3 lead with 6:57 to play in the first half.
Later in the period, Jalil Brown picked off Reesing and returned the ball to the Kansas one-yard line, with Hansen taking it in two plays later to help the Buffaloes take a 24-3 lead.
Kansas, though, was able to get into the end zone before the break as Reesing drove the team 90 yards in 12 plays and finished the drive with a four-yard toss to Meier to make it a 24-10 game at the break.
Colorado began the third quarter with the ball and got a 39-yard field goal from Goodman for a 27-10 advantage.
Kansas cut into its deficit on the next touch as a seven-play, 80-yard drive that took just 3:12 was capped on a two-yard touchdown run by Toben Opurum to make it a 27-17 game with 7:24 to play in the third.
Rodney Stewart fumbled the ball on the Buffs' next touch and Kansas got a 43- yard field goal from Branstetter to make it a one-possession game.
Another Buffaloes fumble, this time by Hansen as he was sacked, set up a 42- yard field goal from Branstetter and it was 27-23 with 1:15 to play in the third.
