Pokes take on Bears in Big 12 tussle

Waco, TX (Sports Network) - The 14th-ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys carry a four-game win streak into Saturday's Big 12 Conference road clash with the Baylor Bears. Oklahoma State owns a 15-12 series advantage over Baylor, which includes a 34-6 romp over the Bears last season.

After losing to Houston in week two of this season, Oklahoma State became a forgotten team nationally. Give credit to head coach Mike Gundy and his players, however, as the Cowboys have bounced back strong from that defeat. Last weekend, they knocked off Missouri by a 33-17 final to move to 2-0 in league play, but with Texas and Oklahoma remaining on the schedule, there is still plenty to prove.

This game marks Homecoming for Baylor, and it seems odd that the Bears would schedule such a tough opponent for a weekend best enjoyed with a victory. Last Saturday, the team suffered a 24-10 loss to Iowa State, dropping consecutive decisions for the first time this season. Baylor is now 3-3 overall this season, including 0-2 in Big 12 play, and a win this weekend would be extremely surprising to say the least.

Oklahoma State scored 33 points against Missouri last weekend, but the Cowboy offense wasn't exactly dominant in the tilt. Afterall, the club finished with 351 total yards and just two touchdowns, modest numbers by most standards. With 124 rushing yards and 3.5 yards per rushing attempt, the ground attack was mediocre. Star tailback Kendall Hunter missed that game with an injured ankle, and Dez Bryant, the team's stud receiver, remains suspended indefinitely. Quarterback Zac Robinson was the only member of the "big three" active against Mizzou, and he completed 22-of-35 passes for 227 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions.

"It's a very good win for us, and we've just got to keep moving forward," said Gundy after the tilt. "It's week-to-week in college football. We've got to prepare and get the guys ready to go play again."

Lucien Antoine made a huge play for the OSU defense against Missouri last week, as he returned an interception 26 yards for a touchdown. The Cowboys did give up 393 total yards to the Tigers, including 325 yards through the air, but they came up with three interceptions and allowed a total of two touchdowns in the clash. Oklahoma State limited Missouri to 3-of-15 success on third down conversion attempts and came up with four total takeaways. The Cowboys pitched a shutout in the second half, key to the win.

"Our goal was to stop them, be more physical and get turnovers," said Antoine after the game. "At half time, the coaches told us to keep our composure and play ball and then we would come up with a lot of turnovers."

Oklahoma State is averaging 37.5 ppg and 413.0 total ypg. The Cowboys feature a balanced offensive attack that has mustered 184.0 ypg and 15 touchdowns on the ground, while posting 229.0 ypg and 11 touchdowns through the air. Perhaps the most impressive stat of all is that Oklahoma State has only allowed two sacks this season, a credit to the offensive line and to Robinson's ability to get rid of the ball quickly. The quarterback has completed 61.7 percent of his passes for 1,297 yards with nine scores and three picks.

Opponents are scoring 22.2 ppg against Oklahoma State, which is yielding 363.5 total ypg. The Cowboys are permitting just 108.3 rushing ypg at a clip of 3.2 ypc, and while the pass defense is giving up 255.2 ypg, it is important to remember that foes have been forced to abandon the run in the second half of most games this season to hang with the Cowboys. Donald Booker leads Oklahoma State with 46 total tackles, including five TFLs.

Baylor had high hopes for '09, but the expectations were tempered significantly when star quarterback Robert Griffin suffered a season-ending knee injury back September. Injuries have affected other members of the offense, as tailback Jay Finley is listed as questionable for Saturday's clash with a quad injury. Jarred Salubi has been fairly effective in Finley's absence, but the team is considerably better with its starter healthy and in full swing. Nick Florence took over for Griffin under center originally, and he has completed 59.5 percent of his throws for 485 yards with one touchdown and one interception. He has also run for two scores, but it is impossible for him to fill the void left by one of college football's best young players. The team has since turned to Blake Szymanski, but that move may have proven a failed experiment.

While Baylor is averaging 27.0 ppg and 367.5 total ypg, the team is allowing 22.7 ppg and 393.8 total ypg. The Bears have surrendered 15 touchdowns to opposing offenses, 10 of which have been rushing scores. There is some room for improvement, as foes are holding possession of the ball for well over 34 minutes per contest, largely because they have been permitted to make good on 45 percent of their third down conversion attempts. There is no question that the best player on defense for the Bears is linebacker Joe Pawelek, who has 56 total tackles to his credit, including 2.5 sacks.

Szymanski struggled mightily under center for Baylor against Iowa State last weekend. Sure, he completed 23-of-38 passes for 223 yards, but the inexperienced signal caller threw three costly interceptions. Ernest Smith made seven catches for 125 yards in that game for the Bears, but his solid effort didn't change the outcome. Largely because of the turnovers, Baylor held the ball for fewer than 24 minutes.

"I didn't think I played very well," said Szymanski after the shaky effort. "When I needed to make plays, I didn't come through with the big plays."

"I'm as disappointed as disappointed can be without jumping into the range of that station," added Baylor head coach Art Briles after the defeat. "There's no excuse for some of the things that happened on the field tonight. It's my responsibility. I know our players will respond."

Obviously, the Baylor defense was put in bad situations by Szymanski and the offense last week. Still, the defense didn't play very well, allowing Iowa State to make good on 12-of-18 third down conversion attempts en route to 36 minutes of possession time. The Bears yielded 454 total yards, including 240 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.
