Clemson pulls out wild OT win over Hurricanes

Miami Gardens, FL (Sports Network) - Freshman quarterback Kyle Parker completed a 26-yard touchdown pass to Jacoby Ford in overtime, as the Clemson Tigers surprised the eighth-ranked Miami Hurricanes, 40-37, in a wild ACC matchup at Land Shark Stadium.

After Richard Jackson tied the game at 34 with a 30-yard field goal with five seconds left in the fourth quarter, forcing overtime, it didn't take long for the Tigers to come away with the win.

Matt Bosher started the extra period by converting a 22-yard field goal on Miami's first chance with the ball, but Clemson ended it on its only offensive try. Facing a 3rd-and-11, Parker hit Ford across the middle of the field for a 26-yard score to give Clemson the victory. DeAndre McDaniel had a standout game for the Tigers' defense with two picks -- one returned for a 23-yard TD -- and seven total tackles.

Parker threw for 326 yards on 25-of-37 completions with three touchdowns and an interception, while C.J. Spiller had a huge game with a school-record 310 all-purpose yards and two scores for Clemson (4-3, 3-2 ACC), which was able to build off a convincing 38-3 win over Wake Forest on October 10.

Spiller had 81 yards rushing, 104 yards receiving, including a 56-yard score, and also returned three kicks for 125 yards with a 90-yard kickoff return for a TD just before halftime.

"We want to be considered one of those elite teams, which we think we really are," said Spiller. "We got to come in and get the win in these types of games. We kind of let two of these games slip away earlier, but we put the focus on and we tried to change that. So this is a big win for us."

Michael Palmer had five catches for 74 yards and a TD before leaving the game in the fourth quarter with an apparent head injury. Ford finished with two catches for 37 yards, including the game-winning score.

Jacory Harris completed 17-of-27 passes for 256 yards with a pair of touchdowns and three picks, while Leonard Hankerson had five grabs for 87 yards and a score for Miami (5-2, 2-2), which had won three straight coming into the contest.

"This has to be my toughest loss here because we fought so hard throughout the game, and we didn't come out with a victory," said Harris. "We let Clemson outwork us and we turned the ball over too much. It was just the little things that made us get to this point."

Travis Benjamin pulled in three passes for 82 yards and a score, while Damien Berry had 55 yards rushing on eight carries and a TD in defeat. Marcus Robinson led the Hurricanes defense with a 52-yard fumble recovery for a score.

With Miami holding a 27-24 lead early in the fourth quarter, the Hurricanes' defense forced Clemson to punt. However, on the first play of the set, Harris starred down his intended receiver and McDaniel jumped the route, taking it 23 yards to the end zone.

Not to be outdone, the Hurricanes quickly struck for a big play of their own when Harris connected with Benjamin for a 69-yard catch and run that went the distance for a 34-31 edge with 9:20 to go in the fourth.

Then with Clemson facing a 3rd-and-goal from the four, the Tigers called timeout to draw up a play, but Parker was unable convert and had his pass picked off in the end zone by Randy Phillips with nearly 6:00 to play.

The 'Canes went three-and-out, giving it back to the visitors with about 3 1/2 minutes to play.

Clemson began from their own 40 following the punt with 3:23 remaining and went on the attack. Jamie Harper rushed for a key 4th-and-1 at the Miami 34, then a Parker completion and a Harper seven-yard gain moved it to the 13 with nine seconds remaining. Following a Tigers' timeout, Jackson came on and hit a 30-yard field goal with five ticks to go to tie it at 34. After a squib kick, the game went into overtime.

After a scoreless opening quarter, things certainly picked up in the second. Bosher put the first points up on a 49-yard field goal to get Miami on the board early in the stanza.

Then after both offenses sputtered temporarily, Clemson went ahead when Parker threw underneath to his big tight end Palmer, who gathered the pass and stretched for the pylon for a 15-yard score with nearly 5 1/2 minutes to play in the half.

Miami answered back on its ensuing possession, as Berry ran it in from 23 yards out with less than a minute remaining.

However, on the kickoff, the dynamic Spiller fielded the ball at the 10 and sprinted down the far sideline literally untouched for the 90-yard score to put the Tigers up 14-10 at the break.

The Hurricanes came out of the locker room and regained the lead on their first drive of the second half when Harris connected with Hankerson for a five-yard score. The lead proved to be short-lived as a Parker-to-Spiller 56- yard catch and run went for seven and a 21-17 Tigers edge.

After a Miami fumble gave the ball back to the visitors, Clemson returned the favor when Parker was thrown for an 18-yard sack by Allen Bailey and coughed up the ball in the process. Robinson picked it up and took it 52 yards to the house, putting the 'Canes back in front with 4:43 to play in the quarter.

Richard Jackson's 43-yard field goal with under a minute remaining in the period tied things at 24. On Miami's ensuing possession a 44-yard run by Javarris James setup Bosher, who banged a 51-yarder through for a three-point 'Canes lead.

Game Notes

Miami will visit Wake Forest on October 31, while Clemson hosts Coastal Carolina...Despite the loss, the Hurricanes still lead the all-time series versus Clemson with a 5-3 mark. Miami claimed a 36-30 win in triple overtime the last time the two teams met in 2005.
