TCU routs BYU in key MWC showdown
Provo, UT (Sports Network) - Andy Dalton threw for 241 yards and three touchdowns, and 10th-ranked TCU routed the 16th-ranked BYU Cougars, 38-7, at LaVell Edwards Stadium.Dalton completed 13-of-24 throws for TCU (7-0, 3-0 MWC), which has won nine straight games dating back to last season and is now tied with Utah atop the West Division in the MWC standings.
Antoine Hicks had two catches for 85 yards and a touchdown, while Matthew Tucker and Joseph Turner each recorded a rushing score in the win. This marked the second straight rout for TCU over BYU, as the Horned Frogs also won last year's contest, 32-7.
"I don't think anyone would have predicted this, and that's why I told the players to enjoy the moment," said TCU head coach Gary Patterson. "I've told the team it's just as hard to handle success as it is to handle disappointment. In some cases I think success is probably harder to handle than disappointment because when we get back everyone is going to tell them what they did. We have a lot of work to do."
Max Hall threw for 162 yards and a touchdown on 18-of-28 passing and also had an interception for BYU (6-2, 3-1), which had won four straight since losing to Florida State. Harvey Unga added 124 yards rushing on 21 carries and scored the team's lone touchdown.
"I thought we had a great week of practice and prepared very well," said BYU defensive back Andrew Rich. "We just didn't execute."
Dennis Pitta added 62 yards on four receptions in the loss.
TCU built up a big lead in the first half.
On the Horned Frogs' second possession, Dalton led the team 80 yards down the field in nine plays, using completions of 25 and 19 yards. Turner capped the drive on a four-yard touchdown run with 6:16 left in the opening quarter.
BYU then went three-and-out, and Jeremy Kerley threw a 44-yard pass to Bart Johnson on the first play of the ensuing TCU drive to the Cougars' 40. Three plays later, Dalton's 28-yard touchdown pass to Ed Wesley made it 14-0.
The Cougars looked to get on the board early in the second quarter, but Mitch Payne missed a 45-yard field goal. The Horned Frogs responded with Jimmy Young's 12-yard touchdown reception to cap an 11-play, 73-yard drive with five minutes before halftime for a 21-point lead.
BYU finally got on the board about three minutes later, as Hall completed a three-yard scoring pass to Unga to finish a nine-play drive.
TCU added to its lead early in the third quarter on Ross Evans' 28-yard field goal, making it 24-7 just over five minutes into the second half.
The Horned Frogs turned the game into a rout, building a commanding 31-7 advantage on the heels of Hicks' 75-yard touchdown grab with six minutes left in the third.
Tucker's seven-yard touchdown run for TCU three minutes into the fourth capped the scoring.
Game Notes
BYU still leads the all-time series, 5-4...Tucker had 42 yards rushing...The Cougars accumulated 85 yards in penalties, compared to just 45 for the Horned Frogs...TCU and Utah play each other at TCU on November 14.
