Jefferson, coming off a dismal performance in a loss two weeks ago to Florida, completed 21-of-31 passes and was not intercepted for LSU (6-1, 4-1 SEC), which sits one game behind unbeaten Alabama in the SEC West. Jefferson also had a rushing score.
"Watching film on the previous teams Auburn played really helped us prepare," Jefferson said. "We noticed they got passed on a lot, and a lot of touchdowns were thrown on them, and they gave up a lot of passing yards. We looked at that this week in practice and really focused on our passing game."
Terrance Toliver and Brandon LaFell each caught a touchdown pass, with Toliver making nine catches for 86 yards and LaFell adding six receptions for 67. Russell Shepard added a 69-yard rushing touchdown in the win.
LSU dominated the game, outgaining Auburn, 376-193.
Chris Todd struggled for the third straight week, passing for only 47 yards on 8-of-14 throws with an interception for Auburn (5-3, 2-3), which has lost three consecutive games since starting 5-0. Todd has not thrown a touchdown pass in any of the three losses.
"I think we just need a spark (on offense)," Todd said. "We need a spark and we need something to get rolling. We're a good football team. We did some good things in that game. We just need to sustain some drives and get into the end zone."
Ben Tate ran for 67 yards on 18 carries for Auburn, while Eric Smith caught three passes for 31 yards.
LSU forced Auburn to punt on its first possession and scored on the ensuing drive. Jefferson's first two pass attempts were completed for 20 and 12 yards, respectively, and two 15-yard penalties put LSU at Auburn's 19. After an offsides penalty, Jefferson threw a 14-yard scoring pass to Toliver for the early lead.
Josh Jasper missed a 49-yard field goal later in the opening quarter, but Todd fumbled the ball away on the next Auburn series, and LSU took over on the opposing 16. After two rushing plays resulted in one yard, Jefferson scrambled 15 yards for a touchdown and a 14-0 lead.
The second quarter was a defensive struggle, and Jasper hit a 32-yard field goal in the final seconds for a 17-0 LSU halftime lead.
A short kickoff in the second half allowed LSU to start from the opposing 45, and it took four plays to find the end zone. Jefferson's 17-yard touchdown pass to LaFell made it a 24-0 game less than two minutes into the third.
Wes Byrum finally put Auburn on the board with a 24-yard field goal four minutes later, but a 69-yard rushing touchdown by Shepard put LSU ahead, 31-3, heading to the fourth quarter.
Neil Caudle threw a one-yard touchdown pass to Philip Lutzenkirchen with three seconds remaining for Auburn to account for the final margin.
Game Notes
The previous five games in this series had all had a six-point margin or fewer...LSU leads the all-time series, 24-19-1...Caudle completed 3-of-5 throws for 34 yards.
