Florida, Alabama still atop BCS poll; Iowa among gainers
Irving, TX (Sports Network) - Florida, Alabama and Texas still hold the top three spots in the Bowl Championship Series standings released Sunday, while the rest of the top-10 saw a number of changes.Iowa (8-0), Southern California (6-1) and TCU (7-0) are fourth through sixth, respectively, with each moving up two spots in the standings. Boise State (7-0) dropped three places to seventh, while Cincinnati (7-0) fell from fifth to eighth. LSU (6-1) and Oregon (6-1) round out the top 10.
Florida (7-0) still controls its chances for getting into the national championship game, as the Gators remained in the top spot with a BCS average of .9726 after defeating Mississippi State on Saturday.
Alabama (8-0) remained in second and has a BCS average of .9450, though only after surviving Tennessee on Saturday. The Crimson Tide beat the Vols, 12-10, as Terrence Cody blocked a 44-yard field goal attempt as time expired.
Texas is third in the standings, as the Longhorns improved to 7-0 with a 41-7 rout at Missouri on Saturday. Texas holds an .8927 average, which is computed by averaging the percentage totals of the Harris Interactive poll, USA Today poll and computer rankings.
After the top three comes Iowa, which needed a touchdown as time expired to beat Michigan State, 15-13, this weekend. The Hawkeyes, who have the top average computer rank, hold an overall BCS average of .8249.
After USC in fifth comes TCU in sixth, as the Horned Frogs became the highest- placed team not from a BCS conference, which are guaranteed automatic BCS bowl bids. TCU's rise came after it delivered a 38-7 defeat to BYU in Provo on Saturday.
Boise State, which had been fourth, sits behind TCU but is still undefeated after whipping Hawaii, 54-9. Likewise, Cincinnati is unbeaten after blowing out Louisville, 41-10, but fell three places to eighth.
Strength of schedule is accounted for in the computer rankings, and while BYU is 6-2, giving TCU a boost, Hawaii and Louisville both have a 2-5 record.
LSU remained in ninth after beating Auburn, while Oregon moved up one place to 10th after routing Washington.
