It will be interesting to see how Miami responds after last weekend's heartbreaking loss to Clemson in overtime by a 40-37 final. The Hurricanes are now just 2-2 in conference, overshadowing a more impressive 5-2 overall record. The setback at the hands of the Tigers halted a three-game win streak for coach Randy Shannon and company, but there is no question that this once- mighty program is on the rise.
Wake Forest fell to 4-4 on the season with a 13-10 loss to Navy last weekend, the second consecutive setback for the squad. Three of the four losses this season have come by three points for the Demon Deacons, who like Miami, are 2-2 in ACC action. The fact that Wake has scored a grand total of 13 points the last two games after posting at least 21 points in each of the first six outings is troubling.
Miami has won the last five meetings with Wake Forest and owns a 6-3 advantage in the all-time series as a result.
The man under center for Miami is Jacory Harris, and he has played well this season overall. Sure, his 10 interceptions mark a rather high total, but the other stats are quite impressive. Harris has connected on 64.6 percent of his passes for 1,774 yards with 13 touchdowns against 10 interceptions. Leonard Hankerson paces a rather pedestrian group of receivers with 20 catches for 380 yards and three touchdowns, while Javarris James leads the tailbacks with 418 yards and four scores.
Miami is averaging 30.1 ppg while limiting opponents to 392.4 total ypg. The Hurricanes haven't run the ball with great success, and their 3.7 ypc average is proof. Still, 11 scores have come on the ground, and the team has made good on 46 percent of its third down conversion attempts.
Opponents are scoring 23.6 ppg this season while gaining 320.6 total ypg against Miami. The Hurricanes are holding foes to 3.4 yards per carry and have given up just six rushing touchdowns. Unfortunately, Miami has struggled at times against the pass, permitting 13.6 yards per completion with nine touchdowns. Allen Bailey is tops with five sacks for the defense, and he has forced a pair of fumbles as well.
Harris threw a pair of touchdown passes against Clemson last week and finished with 256 yards through the air, but he was intercepted three times, a major factor in the loss. Hankerson made five catches for 87 yards and a touchdown, which Craig Cooper rushed for 99 yards.
"This has to be my toughest loss here because we fought so hard throughout the game, and we didn't come out with a victory," said a dejected Harris after the contest. "We let Clemson outwork us and we turned the ball over too much. It was just the little things that made us get to this point."
Defensively, the 'Canes were gashed for 326 yards and three touchdowns by the Tigers' quarterback, overshadowing the fact that they did a good job against the run. Clemson scored on an interception return as well as a kickoff return, so it does need to be pointed out that the Miami defense didn't play nearly as bad as the final score suggests.
Asked to describe what went wrong on a touchdown pass allowed in overtime, coach Shannon said, "A breakdown. All sloppy play. You give up big plays when you get sloppy."
With back-to-back poor offensive showings, Wake's average output has dropped to 23.6 ppg and 380.2 total ypg. The Demon Deacons have had trouble moving the ball on the ground this season as their 3.4 ypc average suggests. Josh Adams is the team's top ground gainer, as he has rushed for 380 yards and two touchdowns.
Quarterback Riley Skinner is an experienced performer who has completed 65.3 percent of his passes for 1,949 yards and 16 touchdowns. While the nine interceptions have hurt the team, Skinner has still played well overall. Marshall Williams is Skinner's top target, and he has caught 36 passes for 514 yards and five scores.
Opponents are scoring 22.8 ppg against Wake Forest, which is yielding 360.8 total ypg. Of the 22 touchdowns that the Demon Deacons have permitted to opposing offenses, 14 have been passing scores. The team has struggled at times against both means of attack, the run and the pass, and the defense can best be described as mediocre.
In the tough loss to Navy last week, Wake Forest only managed 10 points despite the fact that it didn't commit a single turnover in the tilt. The Demon Deacons posted 308 total yards, including 173 yards and a touchdown from Skinner. The fact is that Wake simply couldn't sustain drives. The club was 5- of-13 on third down conversion attempts and held the ball for fewer than 26 minutes.
Navy did not attempt a single pass against Wake Forest last weekend. The Midshipmen had 64 rushing attempts, resulting in 338 yards and a touchdown. So while the Demon Deacons knew what was coming, they simply didn't do enough to stop the ground attack. Still, it is hard to put too much blame on the defense for the loss, as only 13 points were surrendered.
"I think any time you play an academy, whether home or on the road, you've got your hands full," said Wake Forest head coach Jim Grobe prior to the Navy game. "You really don't see ups and downs with academy teams, they play hard every week."
Unfortunately for Grobe, Navy played a bit too hard for his Deacs.
