The Bearcats' regular-season winning streak dates back to last season and includes a recent 41-10 trouncing of Louisville this past weekend. It was Cincinnati's most lopsided victory over Louisville since 1951, as the team recorded its second straight Keg of Nails win.
"An exciting day for the University with the largest crowd and topping it off with good football," said head coach Brian Kelly. "Our guys were on top of it right from the beginning."
At a perfect 7-0, the Bearcats are off to their best start since 1954 and they have defended their Big East title successfully thus far, with a 3-0 ledger in league play.
As for Syracuse, it stepped out of league play this past weekend and defeated Akron, 28-14, to improve to 3-2 in non-conference action.
"Overall, we got a win against a team that when you're on that field, they feel level," said first-year head coach Doug Marrone. "At the end of the day, I thought we beat a good football team."
The win put an end to a two-game slide and gave the Orange a 3-2 record on its current and lengthy six-game homestand. Syracuse however, now returns back to the Big East, where it has gone 0-2 thus far.
In regard to the all-time series, Cincinnati owns a 5-4 lead over Syracuse, as the Bearcats have won the last four encounters, including a 30-10 decision last season.
The Bearcats played their first game of the season without star quarterback Tony Pike and it didn't faze the team one bit. Cincinnati, which is averaging 40.7 ppg and 458.6 ypg on the season, racked up 468 total yards in a 41-10 rout of Louisville this past weekend.
Quarterback Zach Collaros made his first career start in place of the injured Pike and was nearly flawless, converting on 15-of-17 pass attempts for 253 yards and three touchdowns. A third-year sophomore, Collaros also ran for 52 yards in a performance that was certainly noteworthy.
"It felt great," said Collaros. "The numbers are pretty good. We could run versus the defense. I didn't get touched all night and the line protected me. When I threw the ball behind them, the receivers caught it."
Collaros stepped in the prior game against USF after Pike left with an injury and he responded by rushing for a career-high 132 yards and two touchdowns. He is by no means going to take over the starting job, as Pike is one of the nation's top quarterbacks having completed 64.3 percent of his tosses, with 15 touchdowns and just three interceptions. Collaros however, does bring a different dimension with his legs and will most likely get the start this weekend as Pike recovers from surgery on his left forearm.
Mardy Gilyard is the team's top target no matter who is under center and he has caught 47 balls for 674 yards and eight scores on the season. The talented wideout showed he could succeed with Collaros under center, pulling in four passes for 82 yards and a touchdown last weekend.
Collaros' success last weekend overshadowed a terrific performance by tailback Isaiah Pead, who rushed for 88 yard and two touchdowns on just six carries. The sophomore back also hauled in a third score and his explosiveness is a nice change of pace to this pass-first offense.
Cincinnati's defense often gets overlooked due to the success of its offense, but this unit has had its share of success. The defense, which lost 10 starters from a year, has become one of the best around, holding opponents to just 13.7 ppg and only 317.6 total ypg. The unit likes to bring the pressure, racking up a whopping 29 sacks, and that has helped in picking off 13 passes.
Last weekend, the Bearcats registered four sacks and a pair of takeaways, while holding Louisville to only 275 total yards of offense, including just 130 rushing.
"We knew they were going to be a heavy run team so our plan was to stop the run and the deep ball," said linebacker Andre Revels. "I'm not a stat person, but it looks like we did a good job of it today. We had to get it back in Zach and Mardys hands and let them do their thing."
Revels may not be a stat person, but he did lead the defense with 11 stops last weekend, giving him a team-best 61 for the season.
The Orange did it on the ground last weekend, rushing 46 times for 234 yards and three touchdowns in a win over Akron. It was quite a performance for a team that is still only averaging 110.9 rushing ypg despite last weekend's effort. Delone Carter did most of the damage, as he toted 30 times for 170 yards and three touchdowns.
"It's almost like he ran with a sense of urgency today, which might have been a little bit different," said coach Marrone.
Carter has now amassed 530 yards and eight scores on the ground this season, as he remains a steady runner for the Orange.
Quarterback Greg Paulus wasn't needed much with Carter's success against Akron and he completed 12-of-17 pass attempts for only 105 yards. The former Duke basketball standout has done a good job in completing 64.5 percent of his tosses on the year, but has been prone to some mistakes, throwing 10 picks against just nine touchdowns.
Mike Williams is the go-to-guy for Paulus and one of the top wideouts in the Big East with 712 receiving yards and six touchdowns to his credit. The talented receiver should also be back in the lineup after serving a one-game suspension for violating teams rules.
The defense for Syracuse turned in a stout effort last weekend, allowing just one touchdown while holding Akron to a mere 191 yards of total offense. The unit was sensational against the run, surrendering no yards on 24 carries, the program's best effort since Florida rushed for negative-17 in 1991.
"We were aggressive on defense, we were able to get five sacks, and we were able to get to the quarterback at times," said Marrone.
Stopping the run and getting to opposing quarterbacks are two areas the defense has fared well in, holding foes to just 83.4 ypg on the ground and recording 19 sacks. Derrell Smith has played a huge factor in that success, as he leads the squad with 64 stops, 10 TFLs and 6.5 sacks.
